Carl hung back, watching Audrey bid farewell to Honour and Lucas, who just like everybody else seemed to love her. His mother was watching, sipping a margherita, probably not her first today. She sat in the corner of the room, her eyes on Audrey. Walking over to her, he waved away a waiter holding a tray carrying drinks. His mother looked put out. He wanted to talk to her while she was still reasonably sober. Her perfectly coiffed hair never had a strand out of place, and as if ignoring Carl, she plucked a mirror from her bag and teased her hair, this way and that. 'Did you want to say something darling?' cooed his mother. 'Because there's a tasty little waiter over there I'd love to get my claws into. What dya think darling, could I seduce a man your age?'
