Chapter 4

Zebulon took me to a nearby hospital. Just as I'd suspected, my shoulder was fractured. I watched him rushing around the hospital, filling out forms and picking up medicine, and my heart softened. My Zebulon was always cold on the outside, but kind on the inside. He said, "Troublemaker, ever pull a stupid stunt like that again, and I'll leave you behind for good." I nodded repeatedly. "I got it, Handsome." Zebulon let out a helpless sigh. "I really don't know what to do with you." He was struggling financially back then and barely had any money to spare. Staying in the hospital would only make his situation worse, so I decided to check out. Zebulon disagreed at first, but he finally completed my discharge paperwork after I insisted repeatedly. He took me to an old residential complex and settled me down there. "It's way too dangerous for a girl to stay under a bridge. You'll live here from now on." The place had only the simplest furniture. I knew Zebulon must have spent nearly every penny he had to rent this apartment. "What about you, Handsome?" I asked, staring at him in confusion. Zebulon shrugged casually. "I'll go back to the bridge." I grabbed him before he could leave. "Handsome, my name's Leanne. Please don't go. I'm scared to stay here all alone." The night was quiet, with summer crickets chirping nonstop outside. The sharp pain in my shoulder kept me awake. I glanced over at Zebulon, who was lying on the sofa. "Handsome, are you awake?" After a long pause, his hoarse voice came through. "What's wrong?" "Do you have any wishes?" I asked. Zebulon fell silent. I was nearly asleep when I heard his quiet, soft reply. "To make tons of money." I knew for sure—he would make that wish come true one day.
