Ivy

16 years later…….. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. “Ugh.” A loud thud resonates through the room as the alarm clock shuts off and falls to the ground. “Ugh” came from above. Ivy rolled over and stretched her arms above her head and looked around. Her room was lit up with the sun peeking through her shades in the glow of the morning light. Her mirror in the corner showed her lying in bed, her blankets all a mess, and her hair frizzled like she was electrocuted. Ivy rolled her head to the corner of her room where her awards and trophies aligned the shelves from top to bottom gave off a little shine from the morning light. She was brilliant. Anything that she wanted to learn, she did and put effort into it. She loved being able to try something and be so good at it. One more week, she thought. Next week was her 17th birthday and she would be in Ireland. Her parents are a little worried about it as she will be going with her class but they knew Ivy never got into trouble. Thinking about the trip made Ivy smile. It would be the first time away from home and the first time she felt excited about something more than awards or trophies. She kept feeling like something was waiting for her in Ireland. She kept dreaming of hills and fairies. Thinking of her dreams made her think back to the one she had last night. Ivy threw the covers off her and went to her desk. She pulled out a notebook and started writing in it. Once she recorded her dream in the book, she then started drawing a man’s face. The man was so familiar, but Ivy has never met him. Next, she started on the woman. The woman resembled Ivy except her face was a bit narrower, her eyes (the same as Ivy’s) were just a shade of blue that Ivy had never seen. Ivy added the colors to the drawings, so they were fresh. Ivy looked at the couple she had drawn. “Why do I know you?” “Ivy!!” Ivy turned as she heard her mother’s voice calling her from downstairs. “Coming!” Ivy closed the notebook up and grabbed her robe on the way to the door. As she closed the door behind her, Ivy didn’t notice how her notebook started glowing. In the kitchen, Mary was gathering plates for the breakfast she made. The smell of pancakes and bacon filled the kitchen as Ivy walked in. “Morning mom.” Ivy sat in a chair at the island where her mom had already put breakfast down. Mary turned and smiled at her daughter. “Good morning, my little flower.” Mom always called Ivy her little flower. It was a thing mom did ever since Ivy was born. Her mother loved flowers and was an excellent gardener, so much so that she decided to open her own horticulture business. “Where’s dad?” Ivy asked as she poured some orange juice for herself from the pitcher. Mary turned back to look out the window leading to their backyard. Ivy stood up so she could look too and there was her dad, out in the backyard on the phone. “Who’s he talking to?” Ivy was curious as she grabbed a plate from her mom. It wasn’t like her father to be on the phone so early before breakfast. It had to be an emergency. Ivy loaded up her plate and looked at the door as her father walked in. “Sorry about that, ladies.” Dad said cheerfully but Ivy could tell his face looked a little down this morning. “Good morning, Papa.” Ivy exchanged with a smile of her own. “Was your phone call to your liking?” Ivy asked. Jim looked over at Mary with his green eyes looking sad, but he changed his expression when looking back at Ivy. “That it was my dear. That it was. Look at this spread. I feel like the luckiest man on Earth to be here with the most beautiful woman.” Ivy chuckled. If dad didn’t want to discuss it, then she would not push but she filed it away for later. Ivy laughed and they finished breakfast together. As Ivy made her way back up the stairs, she couldn’t help but feel a change was coming. Ivy walked back into her room and went to her closet. As she walked by, Ivy didn’t notice the shimmer in her mirror. Ivy picked out a nice flowy summer dress due to the heat wave that was supposed to happen later that day. Ivy went back to her room and looked at her desk to where her notebook was lying. Ivy’s brow wrinkled as she looked at it. The notebook had moved, she was sure of it. Ivy sat her dress down on her bed and went to her desk. The notebook was on the wrong side! Ivy looked around her room but everything else was where it should be. “Odd” she whispered. “I don’t remember putting it there.” Ivy shook off the feeling like she was being watched and went to get ready for the day.
