Bastian After making sure Kaida was secure with enough guards stationed at the hospital, I left. I couldn’t afford to stay any longer. Being around her, watching her fragile body recover, only stirred more emotions in me—ones I couldn’t allow myself to feel. Not now. Ben was waiting for me in the car, his face tight with concern. But I didn’t let any of it show. I was fine. I had to be. “She’s safe for now,” I muttered as I got into the passenger seat. Ben eyed me cautiously, the tension in the air palpable. “You don’t look fine,” he said, his eyes never leaving the road as he started driving. “This is getting to you.” I scoffed, leaning my head against the window, trying to ignore the mess of thoughts in my head. “I’m not the one being played here, Ben. I’m the one doing the playing.”
