Kaida Morning came too quickly, and the tension from last night still clung to me like a shadow. I barely slept, and when I did, my dreams were filled with that black car tailing me, the white rose on the doorstep, and the sense that someone was lurking just out of sight, always watching. The knock on the door startled me, and when I opened it, Bastian stood there, his expression hard but his eyes soft with concern. “I told you I’d come by first thing,” he said, stepping into the apartment and looking around as if to assess the security situation.
