Chapter 19

PENELOPE POV The scream died in my throat. The floor lurched beneath my feet. Not a tremor. Not an earthquake. The entire library moved. Books crashed from towering shelves, exploding across the stone floor as dust filled the air. The candle on the table toppled over, its flame extinguished instantly. Raphael grabbed the edge of the table to keep his balance. “It’s happening…” His voice was barely audible. “What is?” Before he could answer… A deafening roar rolled beneath us. The shelves groaned. Cracks spread across the ceiling like lightning trapped inside stone. I stumbled backward, clutching my father’s journal against my chest. “What is happening?” I shouted. Raphael wasn’t looking at me. He was staring at the floor. His face had gone completely white. “No…” The stone beneath the center of the library began to glow. Thin silver lines appeared across the floor, weaving together into an enormous symbol. The same raven wrapped around a crown of thorns. Only now… It was alive. The lines pulsed like veins carrying light instead of blood. I stared in disbelief. “What is that?” Raphael swallowed. “The Second Seal.” Before I could ask another question… The symbol shattered. A violent blast of freezing air erupted from beneath the floor, throwing both of us backward. The journal flew from my hands. “No!” I lunged for it. My fingertips brushed the leather just before it slid across the floor. The pages flipped wildly by themselves. Faster. Faster. As though invisible hands were searching for something. Then… They stopped. Not on one of my father’s entries. On a page that had been blank. Dark ink slowly spread across the parchment. Letter by letter. As if someone unseen was writing. I crawled closer. The first sentence appeared. The King is dead. My breath caught. “What…” Raphael closed his eyes. “No…” More words bled onto the page. The First Keeper has fallen. The Second Seal is broken. The room shook again. A deep crack split the library floor from one end to the other. The sound that came from below wasn’t a roar anymore. It was breathing. Slow. Heavy. Patient. Something enormous had awakened. I looked at Raphael. “The King…” My voice shook. “…he’s really dead?” He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he bowed his head. “May the old gods have mercy.” A cold numbness settled over me. I had barely met the King. I hadn’t understood who he truly was. But somehow… His death felt wrong. Like the world itself had shifted. Then another sentence appeared in the journal. I watched the ink crawl across the page. Find the Heir. I frowned. “The heir?” Raphael’s eyes widened. “It shouldn’t say that.” “What does it mean?” “It should have written…” He stopped speaking. “What?” His voice dropped to a whisper. “It should have written ‘Find the King.’” Silence. Then realization struck him. He looked at me. Not with fear. With disbelief. “The castle already recognizes its new King.” My heart pounded. “Julian…” Raphael nodded once. “King Julian Valerius.” Before either of us could move… The ancient library doors exploded inward with a thunderous crash. Stone fragments flew across the room. A rush of cold air swept through the library. I spun toward the entrance. Standing in the broken doorway… Covered in dust, his black coat torn from falling stone… Was Julian. His chest rose and fell heavily. His eyes found mine immediately. For a single heartbeat… Neither of us spoke. Then he said the last words I ever expected to hear. “My father is dead.”
