Twenty-Three | What Do You Mean?

1294 Words
Cal I watch as Titus’ mom Amy walks towards us and Titus stands behind her with a frustrated expression. All I can think of is what did I do to already make her dislike me… I’ve hardly even talked to her! She asks if we want drinks and Titus comes and sits by me and places his arm around me. Amy walks away and I see that both Olive and Britt seem to have concerned expressions. I look at Titus and say, “I’m going to go help your mom.” He smiles and nods, “Great idea, Cali.” I walk away and wipe my sweaty palms against my outfit and try to calm my nerves. I come up behind her and say, “Mrs. Amy, can I help you?” She smiles at me and it’s such a warm and welcoming smile that it begins to soothe my doubts and she says, “Call me Amy, sweetie. And thank you I would appreciate it.” I smile as she turns to take a step to pass me the glass, but her foot caught on the rug and the ice-cold water spills all over me. I gasp in surprise and immediately her face shows shock, and she says, “I am so sorry!”  Titus is by my side instantly and starts helping me clean up and I laugh, “It’s fine it was an accident.” Titus sighs, “Follow me, you can wear one of my shirts.” I nod and smile at him and I turn back to his mom and say, “It really isn’t a big deal.” She nods, but has an odd expression on her face and I walk back to follow Titus to his room.   Titus I could tell by the look on my mom’s face that she tripped on purpose. I had a hard time not yelling at her for her behavior, but Cali didn’t even notice. As I helped her clean some of the water off, I could smell her mouthwatering scent and I could tell from my mom’s face that she could too. I showed Cali my room and apologized as I showed her my shirt drawer so she could pick something out. I dismissed myself and walked to the kitchen where the others have now joined my mom. I let out a low growl and my mom’s eyes flickered to me and she said, “I’m sorry son, but I needed to smell her scent.” “And?” I ask as I cross my arms. She licks her lips and her eyes flicker to my friends then back to me and she says, “I think she’s a wolf.” Britt laughs while Olive stares at my mom in shock. Olive shakes her head as she says in a soft voice, “That’s not possible.” My mom chuckles, “Trust me, it is. She’s a wolf.” Britt’s face gets serious and she shakes her head, “It’s not possible. She doesn’t even smell like a wolf. Wolves have natural scents like sage, mint, pine… she smells tropical and I’ve never smelt a wolf that smells like that.” Olive adds, “Besides if she was a wolf then wouldn’t she be feeling the bond with Titus and want him to mark her?” I look back at my mom waiting for her response, but she doesn’t answer she just looks at Cali who is standing at the bottom of the stairs. I didn’t even notice her enter the room, which is odd for me, but I was too distracted by the news that my sweet princess might be a wolf. Her eyebrows are furrowed deeply, and her lips are slightly pouted, and I wonder how much she overheard. She takes the last step from the stairs and as she slowly walks towards us, she asks softly, “What do you mean by feeling a bond and wanting to mark?” Olive looks down and I can see she is mentally beating herself up. Eric noticed too because he pulls her close to him and tries to settle her. She looks between each of us and asks in a louder voice, “Will anyone answer me?” I walk towards her and say, “Princess, maybe we should go talk in private?” I reach towards her and she steps away from me avoiding me touching her and it makes my wolf whimper loudly. She asks in a harsher tone, “Olive, what did you mean by that?” Olive’s eyes are wide, and her mouth is open, but she doesn’t answer anything. My mom tries to fix things and says, “Cali, dear, maybe you and Titus should go talk?” “I want to know what you all are hiding from me.” She states and I can see the anger in her eyes. We all remain quiet and I can feel power radiating off of her with each second that passes that she doesn’t get an answer. I touch her arm and pull her towards me, and I ask, “Cali, do you believe in supernatural beings?” Her eyebrows furrow, “What like ghosts?” “No… more like shifters. Like… do you believe in werewolves?” I ask hesitantly. She looks really confused, but slowly a smile spreads across her face as she begins to laugh. I look towards Olive and Britt and I’m pretty sure Cali has lost her marbles. She shakes her head and says, “Okay, come on now, be serious. What were you all talking about?” I gulp not knowing how to answer and Britt says softly, “Cal, we’re not joking.” She scoffs, “Fine, if you’re really a ‘werewolf’” She says that word tauntingly and continues looking at me, “Then prove it. Let me see your wolf.” My mouth feels dry… this isn’t how I wanted to do this. I don’t want her to be scared of me. I sigh, “Cali, can we go be somewhere private?” “No! If you’re a wolf, then prove it. Show me, right now.” I sigh and close my eyes and allow my bones to shift. Kane allows me to remain in control because he knows I would be able to refrain from doing anything too crazy. Cali stands in front of me and looks at me in shock and turns towards the others and stutters, “You-you’re all wolves?” Everyone nods confirming her suspicion. She looks back at me and I see tears begin to fall down her cheeks and I can’t help the whimper that comes from my lips. She jumps back and is scared of me. She turns towards the stairs and runs up and I hear a door slam shut and I know that she is in my room. I shift back into my human self and Hugh passes me some clothes so I can cover up. I look towards the others and no one will meet my gaze. I sigh and walk towards my bedroom to go check on Cali. I am terrified that once she realizes that she could reject me that she will in a heartbeat and I will lose out on being with her forever.
