Cal
It’s 7:00 a.m. by the time I’m done cooking breakfast and people have stopped coming in expecting me to be cooking. I collapse on the couch letting myself have a small break before I pack all the cookies up and begin my walk to meet the pack members today.
My hope is to be out of the house by 8.
After Titus, Hugh, and Eric ate breakfast they left to go work out. I feel like they workout like 3 times a day and like I get that they have to stay in shape because they’re the leaders of the pack, but it seems excessive.
I push myself off the couch and as I walk back towards the kitchen, I see Olive and Britt coming down the stairs. Britt smiles at me cheekily and says, “Good morning, Luna.”
I roll my eyes and Olive says, “I’m surprised your up. I would’ve thought that you would’ve been sleeping.”
I shrug, “I wanted to make breakfast for the pack. There’s still a little left if you guys want some.”
We all walk into the kitchen and I bring out the plastic and the ribbon I was tying my cookies up with. I placed each package in a large picnic basket that I would be carrying with me and I said, “I made you guys some Amish bread. It’s in the pantry with your names on it.”
Britt rushes to the pantry because my Amish bread is one of her favorite things and she knows I normally don’t make it except around Christmas time. So, this was a special occasion.
Olive asks, “How are you feeling?”
I smile, “I’m good. I was overwhelmed with the thought of being Luna, but actually being Luna… I don’t know it seems almost like it’s what I was meant to do.”
I hear my dad’s voice ring out as he makes his presence known, “It’s because it is what you were meant to do.”
I smile at him as he walks over to me and places a kiss on my temple before pulling me into a hug as he says, “You have no idea how proud I am of you, Cal.”
I feel myself get teary-eyed as I respond, “Thanks daddy.”
He pulls away from me and he notices Britt with a loaf of Amish bread in front of her and he asks, “Is there some for me?”
I chuckle, “Yeah, there’s a loaf in the pantry with your name on it. But all of you have starter bags you have to pass out! Within the next few weeks, I want everyone in the pack to have tried Amish bread and hopefully it will make the pack even closer.”
Olive smiles at me, “That’s a really good idea, Cali.”
I grin, “Thanks, Olive.”
I finish packing my picnic basket and I begin my walk towards the single houses to meet my pack and bring cookies.
All of the high ranked wolves that I was passing the Amish bread to were inside of the pack house so I left the Amish bread there and will hand it out personally whenever I get back.
I learned which house was Rose’s and I decided to save hers for last. I am exhausted by the time I get down passing out cookies and it’s now past 2 and I still haven’t eaten. I reach Rose’s house and I really hope I can stay with her for longer than 3 minutes because I could really use a break.
I knock on her door and wait for a moment and I can hear a screaming child and Rose shouting something that I think was, “Give mommy a minute!”
The door opens up and I smile at her, but she looks absolutely exhausted. Her hair hasn’t been brushed, there are some bags under her eyes, and there’s a stain on her shirt. She realizes it’s me and her eyes widen, and her hands immediately go to her hair to try to smooth it down as she says, “Luna.”
I grab her hands and place them by her side, and I open my mouth to speak when the child lets out another scream. I sigh as I see her stressed out face and ask, “Can I come in?”
She nods slowly and opens the door wide so I can walk in. I walk into the small house that is cluttered with toys and I notice Alya sitting in front of the TV watching a cartoon ignoring the screaming toddler a few feet away from her. I walk over to the toddler that is in the playpen and I smile at him as I run my hand through his dark curls and I say, “Hi there, you must be Chris.”
He looks at me with his dark brown eyes and the lone tear is still going down his cheek. I wipe his tear away and offer my hands out to him and he greedily raises his arms, desperate for me to pick him up. I place him on my hip and bounce with him till he’s giggling.
I look over at Rose who watches me in awe. I ask, “Would you like a break?”
She nods slowly, and I say, “I’m going to take Chris and Alya with me back to the pack house. Come by around dinner time. How about you get a nap, take a shower, or whatever you want with the kid free time you have.”
Her lower lip trembles and her eyes fill with tears and she asks, “Why are you doing this for me? You don’t even know me.”
I give a reassuring smile, “Because I’m the Luna and we are in the same pack which to means we’re family. This is what we do for family. Get some rest and I’ll take care of your kids.”
She nods slowly and I call for Alya and her head pops up and she runs to my side. I set Chris down and hold his hand and reach my other hand out for Alya and we head for the door. I hear Rose as we begin to walk out of house whisper, “Thank you.”
