Twenty-Two | Where Is Her Scent?

1039 Words
Cal I am meeting Titus’ mom today. I am incredibly nervous as I wait for him to pick me up. I sit on my front porch and blue with the hem of my dress. I tried to dress up, but I still wanted to be casual. I’m wearing a baby blue lace dress with brown cowboy boots and my mom braided my hair in a side braid. I see Titus pull up in his Jeep and I stand up and wave at him. He is smiling widely as he gets out of the car and he whistles at me as he walks towards me. He holds his hand out to grab mine and immediately spins me making my dress flare out. He says with a grin, “You are gorgeous, Calliope.” My eyes meet his and he smiles softly, and he says, “I know, your full name isn’t your favorite, but I’m your boyfriend I think I should be allowed to say it every once in a while.” I roll my eyes and say, “I’ll let it slide, this time.” He nods towards the car and says, “Come on, let’s get going. My mom is so excited to meet you.” I nod nervously as I follow him to the car. He starts driving the familiar path towards his property. It’s about twenty minutes of driving when we pull onto his land which was honestly hard to notice in the first place with all of the trees. I didn’t even see the path, but Titus knew it by heart. We pull up to this mansion like house and I can’t help but have my jaw dropped. I look towards him and he chuckles at my expression and says, “Don’t stress Cali.” I scoff, “Don’t stress? You didn’t tell me you lived in a freaking mansion!” He laughs and gets out of the car and the butterflies in my stomach are so strong it makes me want to throw up. He opens my door and holds his hand out for me to take, but I feel like I’m glued to my seat unable to move. He sighs and says, “Cali, there’s no reason to worry. It’s not a big ordeal… Olive, Britt, Hugh, and Eric are joining us.” My eyes flicker down to him and then back to the house as I ask, “Why are they joining us?” He shrugs, “Eric and Hugh are like my brothers and the girls are like your sisters. I thought it would make you feel more at ease and my mom was okay with it.” I nod in understanding and take his hand and he smiles like he’s on top of the world and he leads me to the entrance to his house. I let out a small breath trying to soothe myself. Everything will be okay. Titus I can tell that Cali’s nervous and I’m doing everything I can to calm her, but she’s still really nervous. I get that there are always nerves whenever you meet your significant other’s parents, but this seems a little more than what would be considered normal. I look at her and give her a reassuring smile as I open the door. I tune into the sound of her heartbeat, I thank my wolf hearing that I’m able to hear it, but my god it’s like it’s going to beat out of her chest. My mom turns towards us and smiles as she comes over and greets us, “Titus! And you must be Cali! My boy has told me so much about you.” She wraps her arms around Cali in a huge hug and Cali hugs her back and I notice her heartbeat finally gets back to a normal pace. My mom says, “Come on in, honey, your friends are in the living room.” Cali nods as she sees her friends sitting on the couch and she walks over there. I begin to walk after her when my mom grabs my arm. I notice that Cali turns back to look at me because I didn’t follow her, and I give her the best reassuring smile that I can. She nods and sits down by herself with her friends. I turn towards my mom and ask, “What’s going on, mom?” She whispers lowly so that no one else can hear, “What is she?” My eyebrows furrow from her response and I ask, “What do you mean?” “She doesn’t have a scent… why doesn’t she have a scent? Even humans have scents.” I sigh, “Honestly, I don’t know, mom. It comes and goes, and I don’t know how.” My mom nods and glances towards Cali and says, “She must be using something to mask the smell. I want to know what her scent is… there has to be a reason she’s hiding it.” I sigh, “Mom, can’t you just enjoy getting to know her?” She looks at me and says, “How do you know she’s really your mate, son? If she can make a potion that hides her scent don’t you think she could make one to make you fall in love with her?” My eyes widen at the comment. I never even considered that as a possibility. I shake my head and say, “Mom, I know she is my mate.” She huffs, “We’ll see.” She walks away from me and asks who wants drinks and then leaves to go get them. I sit beside Cali and put my arm around her. I try not to let my mom’s comments get to me, but it is concerning.
