Cal
Spending some time alone with Titus was just what I needed. It made me feel completely refreshed and I go downstairs to help Amy with the kids before Rose arrives. I hear the knock at the door, and I smile as I get off the floor and rush to answer it. When I see Rose, I can’t help but let out a little sigh of relief. She looks so much better.
Her hair is now in a neat side ponytail, the bags from under her eyes are almost gone, she’s wearing a little bit of makeup and has on clean clothes. I open the door wide and say, “Come in, Rose.”
She smiles at me and as soon as she walks in, I watch as her eyes land on her children and her face immediately softens. She sees Titus and says, “How are you, Alpha?”
He smiles at her and says, “You’re a guest joining us for dinner, Rose, please call me Titus.”
She nods and breathes out and says, “Thank you Alp-” She stops and makes a face as she nods and then continues, “Titus.”
He chuckles softly at her and she walks over to gather her children so we can all sit for dinner. The dinner… is not what I expected.
It’s quiet other than the sounds of the kids. Every time we try to engage in conversation it seems to just fall flat quickly.
Rose seems nervous the whole time we eat, but the food is good. Titus had the omega’s make chicken pot pie and the kids were even eating every bite.
Titus excused himself from the table- I’m sure due to the awkwardness and hoping that things wouldn’t be so weird if he was gone. I turn towards Rose and ask, “Are you okay, Rose?”
She nods, “I’m fine. I really can’t thank you enough, Cali, for watching the kids earlier.”
I smile, “It’s my pleasure. You know… I haven’t ever heard- what do you do for work?”
“I work at the daycare that Chris is in. We don’t make much, but it’s enough to cover the bills.” She answers with a shrug and a heavy sigh.
I nod and ask, “Do you know if there are other women like you in our pack?”
“I mean, not my same circumstance. But there are single mothers in the pack, and I mean there are some single fathers too.”
I sigh, “What do you think would most benefit for someone who is a single parent?”
“Honestly, I think childcare is the thing I stress the most about. Trying to have a job that can pay enough to cover the bills and childcare is tough and the kids can’t go to public school till they’re in kindergarten. On top of that trying to figure out stuff in the summer is an absolute nightmare.”
I nod, my wheels turning on what we can do to resolve the situation. I open my mouth to say a suggestion, but Chris begins to cry, and Rose looks at her watch and sighs, “I’m so sorry, it’s past his bedtime. We really need to get going but thank you so much for inviting us over.”
She picks Chris up and calls Alya and off they went. I lean back in my chair and huff loudly and I hear Amy’s voice, “It’s nice what you’re trying to do for her, Cal, but you have to remember that she has her guard up. You’re still a stranger to her and she’s used to doing everything on her own.”
I look towards Amy with a small smile and I ask, “Where were you during dinner?”
She chuckles softly, “I was in the kitchen and I was making dessert.”
At the sound of that I stand up and walk towards her making her laugh as she led me towards a tray of cupcakes. I noticed a couple of cupcakes with no icing on it and she said, “I thought Alya would enjoy decorating them. I didn’t realize they were going to leave so soon. I’ll bring it by their house tomorrow evening.”
I grin, “That’s nice of you, Amy.”
She waves her hand and says, “I’ve always loved children. Maybe those two kids can help keep me occupied until you guys give me grandkids.”
My cheeks turn crimson, and I hear Titus yell, “Mom!”
She laughs and shrugs, “I’m just saying, I’m not getting any younger!”
He shakes his head and tugs on my arm as he says, “Come on, Cali, let’s go brainstorm together.”
I follow him up to our bedroom and the second we walk through the door I blurt out, “I want to get a daycare setup here on the pack for any single parents and I want it to be free.”
Titus turns to me with his eyebrows raised and he takes a deep breath and nods, “Okay. I’ll start getting started on it.”
My mouth parts open in shock of how easy this was, and I ask, “Really?”
He smirks, “Every Luna kind of has a passion project. You found yours very quickly and if it makes you happy and our pack then there’s no question- that’s what we’ll do.”
My smile grows and I ask, “How did I get so lucky to have you as my mate?”
He grins as he walks towards me and says softly, “I’m the lucky one.”
Then he captures my lips in his and after a moment he pulls away and says, “Come on, we need to get to bed if we’re going to school tomorrow.”
I nod, “You’re right, but I need a shower before bed.”
I notice that his eyes darken at the thought of joining me in the shower and I smirk as I run off towards the bathroom and I hear his footsteps as he follows. I slip in the door laughing as I lock the door and he playfully hits the door once and says, “Oh come on, Cali!”
I giggle, “Nope! I want to actually you know get clean in this shower.”
He chuckles lowly and responds in a husky voice, “It’s so much more fun if you get really dirty first.”
I laugh as I turn on the water and begin to strip for my shower.
