Twenty-Seven | Restrain Him

1011 Words
Eric Hugh and I stay against the wall as we watch and wait to see if anyone orders us to do anything. We are all waiting for Olive and Britt to get back with Cali’s parents and I just hope that they’ll be able to shed some light on whatever is happening to Cali. I watch as Titus sits by her side holding her hand and he is pale, and his face is full of terror. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him so scared before. I get it though, if this was Olive it would be like my heart was getting ripped out of my chest. Hugh randomly starts pacing and I can tell he feels just as useless as I do and as the Beta and Gamma of our pack, we hate feeling useless. I can only imagine how much worse it is for Titus. I hear Olive’s voice in my head and it calms me as she asks: How is she doing? I sigh sadly: The same, Ol, she’s unconscious. I’m so scared, Eric. I gulp as I try to think of what I could say to comfort my mate, but I come up short and just respond: I know, dear, I am too. How far away are you? We are about to cross the tree line. I nod feeling a little bit of relief hearing that and I speak up, “Alpha, I just heard word from Olive, and she says they are about to cross the tree line.” He breathes out a heavy sigh of relief and nods as he mutters, “Good, good.”  I hear in my head from one of our patrols: Beta, incomers with scents we don’t recognize. I realize that no one ever informed the patrols of the incoming arrival and I quickly respond: Let them through it’s your future Luna’s parents. I get a response saying yes sir and I look up when I hear Titus’ voice and he’s looking at the doctor as he asks with worry laced into his voice, “Doc, if this isn’t her shifting do you think she will be able to live through it?” The doctor rolls his lips into his mouth and looks down and I know that whatever is happening to her must be deadly for a human. Literally, our only hope of our Luna surviving is if she turns out to be a wolf. I honestly don’t know if Titus would be able to run our pack without Cali by his side. I think if she died now it would break him and he wouldn’t be able to recover from it. I watch as Luna Amy crouches down behind Titus and rubs her hand up and down his back as she says, “Try not to stress, son, she’ll be okay.” Suddenly, Cali pops up gasping for air. She looks around and her eyes land on Titus’ and she begins to fall back, and Titus asks desperately, “Calliope, talk to us, princess, where does it hurt?” She winces and opens her mouth to speak but before she has the chance, I hear a woman’s voice call her name, “Calliope!” I look towards the woman and see her rush towards Cali. The woman has a petite frame- Cali has to be taller than her and she has raven black hair pulled into a side braid. She sits down by Cali’s side and touches her face as she murmurs her worries. A booming voice fills the room and it’s full of authority as the man yells, “What is happening to her?!” A growl passes through every single wolf’s lips as we look at the man who spoke so disrespectfully. He was maybe 6 foot, had cropped short brown hair, a full beard, and his eyes were switching back and forth between black and brown showing that his wolf is about to break loose. He is sweating profusely as I can see the sweat stains on him and slowly, I begin to notice his scent… he’s a rogue. Luna Amy gasps, “You’re a rogue!” She looks towards me and Hugh and commands, “Restrain him!” Both of us take one step forward and Cali’s father lets out a loud warning growl and Titus stands up and says, “Stop, it’s Cali’s dad. We will not restrain him not until we learn more information and see if he’s actually a threat.” The man’s face softens as he gives Titus a nod of gratitude and respect. The corner of Titus’ lips twitches up as he nods back and sits back down by Cali. The man walks quickly across the room as he gets to his daughter. The concern is evident on his face and I hear Titus ask him, “Sir, you’re obviously a wolf and your wife is a human. Don’t you think that there a chance Cali is a wolf?” He huffs, “I don’t know.” Luna Amy speaks up, “Well, she has a 50/50 shot since she obviously has a wolf for a parent.” Cali’s father’s eyes meet his wife’s, and she nods to him as if urging him to talk to us. He licks his lips nervously and lets out a long breath before he says cautiously, “I don’t know if she could be or not…” His eyes flicker back to his wife’s and she nods again as she silently encourages him. The next sentence shocks everyone to their core, “Because Cali is not biologically either of ours.”
