Forty-Two | What Is Heat?

1786 Words
Alexander   She’s in heat. Of course, she’s in heat! I catch her as she crumbles to the ground and I have to fight Bruce from coming out, but I can feel my teeth elongating in anticipation of marking her. I have to stay strong- this is no way to mark a girl! I ask her softly, “You’re a wolf?” How could she have never told me? How did I not know?! If I knew she was a wolf, then I never would’ve broken up with her. We could be together now, and I could help her through her heat. A loud growl erupts in the hallway and before I even have a chance to look and see who it was, I am pressed against the lockers. My eyes look for Cal to make sure that she’s okay since I had no choice, but to drop her. When I see Britt and Olive on either side of her, relief floods through my veins. Titus growls again and pushes me harder against the locker and I exhale slowly as I raise my hands knowing that I have no choice, but to surrender to him. An Alpha wolf trying to protect his mate who’s in heat is not one to be messed with. Bruce growls in my head frustrated that I had to surrender to him. He hates showing any weakness. Britt pulls on Titus’ arm and tries to get his focus off of me. He lets me go with a low warning growl before turning around and picking Cal up and carrying her away. Watching as she leans into his touch and puts her face in the crook of his neck makes my heart feel like it’s shattering. She’s supposed to be mine! Mine to mate. Mine to love. Mine to cherish. Mine to have. Bruce grumbles in my head: But she’s not yours. She’s not mine either. She’s his. All because you had to be a dumbass and reject her. I sigh and begin to rub my temples in frustration and to subdue the oncoming headache. I argue: Bruce, you know I didn’t have a choice. He huffs in my head: Your father is a weak alpha who only cares about power because he has never been in the opportunity to have it! We easily could’ve stood up for our mate and gotten the alpha title from him. I sigh: He wouldn’t be willing to give us the Alpha title if we accepted a human as our mate, you know that! He roars at me: We would’ve fought for the alpha title! I growl back: And he never would’ve conceded. I would’ve had to kill my own father! My mother and sister never would’ve forgiven me! He huffs: Congratulations Al, now you will never be a strong Alpha. You lost our chance at a mate and an alpha is only as strong as his mate. And look...she was one of us all along. I can feel him shutting me out now as he wants to leave the conversation. I sigh as I think back to when she crumbled into my arms. The smell of her scent was overwhelming, and I felt my teeth elongate in preparation to mark her. I was somehow able to keep my senses and when she looked up at me, I saw the most beautiful violet eyes. I try to ask Bruce: Do you know why her eyes are violet? He ignores me. He’s tired of talking to me because he’s still angry with what I did. I huff in frustration and I hear my sister’s voice, “What’s going on, Alex?” I look at her, startled by her presence and she says, “I could tell you were talking with your wolf, so I stayed quiet. What’s going on with you?” I look around and say, “Let’s go home, we’ll talk in the car.” “School is still in session.” She argues. I huff, “I’m going home. I need to run, and the school day is half over anyways.” She nods and follows me out. After we get into the car she asks, “What’s going on?” I sigh, “Did you realize Cal was a wolf?” She says, “Never would’ve pegged her for a wolf. What does it matter though?”  “She was my mate. When I told dad, he made me reject her because he thought she was human.” “I thought Titus was her mate?” “He is. He’s her second chance mate. Now, she’s in heat and he’s about to mark her.” I sigh loudly, “I think I may have made the worst mistake of my life.” “Then stop him?” I scoff, “How am I supposed to do that?” “I don’t know. You could attack the pack. He stole your Luna.” “I rejected her.” I sigh and Haley waves her hand dismissing me and says, “That’s irrelevant. She’s meant to be yours just like I’m meant to be his.” I roll my eyes; Haley craves power just as much as my father does. Bruce speaks in my head: It’s because her wolf is a runt just like your father’s. Do not attack the pack, that’s not what a good Alpha would do. I mutter back to him: I know, Bruce. Titus I don’t know why I have felt so protective over Calliope today. Kane is making me not want to let her out of our sight and I know that she is getting annoyed by it. I can tell by her posture and the way she looks at me occasionally. I can’t help it though, I just… I need to be next to her. When she excused herself to go to the bathroom, I desperately wanted to follow her, but I knew that I couldn’t. She ended up being gone for a while and I started to get really nervous that something must be wrong. Suddenly I am hit like a freight train with the smell of her scent. I am salivating from it and I suddenly notice that the s****l tension in my classroom is heavy and I know she is in heat and all of the werewolves that are boys are ready to go find her and mark her. I rush towards the door, ignoring my teacher, and I get in the hallway and see Alexander holding her. I can’t help the ferocious growl that slips through my lips and I rush to separate them. I hear her friends go to her side and I push Alexander against a wall and growl, “MINE!” He nods and holds his hands up in surrender and I am blinded by rage towards him being near my mate. I feel Britt tugging on my arm and she says, “Titus, she needs you now. Leave him alone.” I turn towards Cali and she is crying and mumbling to Olive about how hot she is and that it hurts. I sigh and pick her up bridal style and she puts her face in my neck and begins to kiss it and I force myself not to moan from the pleasure she’s sending me. She says breathlessly, “You make the pain go away. How do you do that? Everywhere you’re touching doesn’t hurt and isn’t hot.” I can feel Kane pressing in my head trying desperately to get out so he can mark her, but I refuse to let him out. I have to be stronger than him. I put Cali in the car and buckle her in before rushing to the other side to get us home. I tell her as I put the car in drive, “You’re in heat.” She groans and touches my hand then breathes out a small sigh of relief knowing that I cooled her down a little and asks, “What’s heat?” “Um,” I gulp as I try to get us to the pack house safely and try to keep my thoughts from going in the gutter. I say, “Heat is something that female wolves like once a year. It’s your body trying to get pregnant and make you mate with your mate.” She says in a panicked voice, “I don’t want to get pregnant!” I chuckle, “I know, princess.” She groans in pain and asks, “Are we ready for that? For s*x?” I have been very ready for it. But I don’t think she is. I look over at her and place my hand on her knee and I say, “That’s up to you, Cali.” She looks at me and asks, “What? You’re ready?” I sigh, “Cali, werewolves are very… s****l creatures. It’s not uncommon for mates to mark and mate each other within 24 hours. I have waited because I knew you weren’t ready for that.” She moans loudly and although I know it’s because she’s in pain due to the smell of her scent clouding my mind it sounds like she’s in pleasure making it that much harder to keep Kane under control. If she chooses not to mate, then I won’t be able to stay with her the whole time during her heat. I will have to have the girls rotate being with her and putting her in an ice bath. I will come and comfort her a few times a day but being around her when her body is putting off such a strong scent is really difficult to keep Kane under control. I will do whatever I have to do to keep her okay and respect her decision. I just hope that she will be willing to mate… it would be much easier on her rather than try to go through a few days of heat.
