Seventy-One | My Heart Aches

1750 Words
Titus When the boys came to my office, I explained that something was wrong with Calliope and we all waited anxiously for Rose to arrive. She has tears in her eyes as she stumbles into my office and she falls to her knees and the tears begin to fall and she sniffles and says, “I’m so sorry, Alpha.” I ask, “What happened?” She sighs, “We were at the mall and we ran into another guy… um his name is Alexander, he’s the upcoming Alpha of the Starry Shadows pack.” I can’t help the growl that escapes my lips and Rose looks at me curiously but shakes her head and moves on. She exhales heavily, “I was about to reject him, but Cali stopped me, and we all went to the car and then she wanted to talk with him alone. They went outside and were a few feet from me and like, out of nowhere these people knocked them out and dragged them away.” It wasn’t Alexander’s fault. He was taken too… what would someone want with him and Cali? Unless… what if they thought he was me? Wait… did she say she almost rejected him? I ask, “Wait, what? You about rejected him?” Tears are in her eyes and she nods, “He was my second chance mate. I was going to reject him because I didn’t feel ready to move on.” She takes a shuddery breath and says, “I’m sorry, Alpha, I should’ve gone and tried to stop the men, but I just felt like frozen and unable to move.” I nod, “I think it’s best you didn’t interfere, Rose, if you did then you wouldn’t have seen everything, and no one would know what’s going on right now.” She nods and I say as I walk towards her and place my hand on her shoulder, “Go downstairs and meet my mother in the kitchen… I’ll link her and let her know you’re coming and for her to get you some tea or something.” She gives me a fake smile as she tries to show her appreciation but can’t be happy right now with Cali gone. She murmurs, “Thank you, Alpha.” As soon as the door closes, I collapse into a chair- stunned that my Luna is nowhere to be found. Both of the boys place a hand on my shoulders and Eric murmurs, “I contacted some trackers to talk with Rose in the kitchen and find out exactly where they were at so they can try and find their scents.” I nod and say, “I’m unable to make contact with Calliope… wherever she is she’s either unconscious or is filled up with wolfsbane to keep her wolf at bay.” Hugh tries to reassure me, “We’ll find her, Titus.” I know that we will… I won’t survive without her. I have to find her. My heart aches when she's not here. Cal I’ve been captured for a week. My heart aches for Titus every day. I feel bad for Alexander… I’ve overheard all of the fights he’s had with his dad. Pretty much, I was Alexander’s mate, but I was human, so his father made him reject me. Alexander’s been moping around, regretting that he rejected me and knowing that he was too late since I had a new mate. Then they found out I was a wolf… and apparently, I’m what they call an ‘amethyst wolf’. Alexander has never heard of the term and his parents won’t tell us what it means. They’ve taken the chains off of both of us, and every day they inject me with enough wolfsbane to keep Esther at bay. Every time they do it Alexander screams at them because he sees how bad it hurts me. Being alone with him so much was awkward, but now we’ve settled into a lot of silence between each other. I think we both want to talk because we have a desire to want a companion, but there is too much to unpack and neither of us really want to go through everything. An omega just dropped off lunch and Alexander sets the tray in front of me. I glance up at him and he says, “I’m sorry, Cal.” He apologizes to me daily. It’s not his fault his parents are psychotic and that his dad craves power. The worst part about the situation honestly is the wolfsbane. I can feel my heightened sense beginning to come back every day and I get so excited knowing I would be able to connect with Esther soon, but then they give me a new dose of wolfsbane, and it drains me. I sigh, “No need to apologize, Alex, it’s not your fault.” He huffs as he sits down, “It kind of is… if I didn’t reject you then we wouldn’t be in this mess.” “I don’t get why your dad wants you to mate with me now anyways. You told him you have a new mate and she’s a wolf and Rose is amazing!” I notice a spark in his eyes because I mentioned Rose. He asks, “Could you tell me about her?” “Honestly, I don’t know a ton about her. We’re still getting to know each other I’ve just been helping her out a lot due to her-” I stop speaking and close my eyes and take a deep breath. I don’t know if she’d want me to tell him about her kids. But then again if I told him know he could think about if this is really something he wants. I don’t want him to get close to her and then reject her. I think that would break her. He tilts his head to the side, waiting to see if I’m going to continue. I say in a serious tone, “I’m going to tell you something about her and I want you to think long and hard about whether or not you think you can handle it because if you can’t then you need to let her reject you.” His voice is low and full of sincerity, “I’m not going to reject another mate, Cal, it’s been my biggest regret that I rejected you.” My eyes meet his and for a moment I wonder if I still see regret in his eyes. I wonder how everything would be right now if he had told me who he was and let me be his mate the way it was supposed to be. I sigh, “You are her second chance mate and she’s a few years older than you are. And with her first mate she had two children. She’s a single mom now and life can be rough. If you’re not ready to handle two children then you don’t need to fight for her.” He sits back seeming stunned by the news and says, “I mean, it’s not the way I would’ve expected kids, but wolves typically procreate quickly so I’m not too surprised by the news. I can handle some kids… I just hope she would be willing to have more.” I nod and ask, “Can you be honest with me?” He seems surprised I want to continue talking, but he smiles and nods, “It’s nice to getting to talk. It’s been tense between us so how about this for as long as we’re trapped in here I’ll be honest with you. Can you do the same for me?” I nod in confirmation and he says, “Okay, shoot.” “Is it really super common to have babies like as soon as you meet your mate?” A laugh bubbles out of his mouth and he nods, “It’s not uncommon at all. We have a desire to complete the mating process quickly and to make our mates. Wolves in general have a very high s*x drive and unless you’re actively trying not to have a baby then it just happens when it happens. Most wolves have a belief of it being in the moon goddess’s timing and choose not to use protection. Some wolves know that they want to accomplish certain things before having pups. I’ve found that in Alphas especially they typically settle down with pups quicker because then they’ll get to retire from being an Alpha younger.” I sigh and throw my head back and he says, “I’m guessing you’re not ready for pups, but Titus is?” “I mean,” I say as I sit back up, “He hasn’t out right said he’s ready, but he’s asked me to start thinking on when will I be ready.” Alexander chuckles and he leans back in his chair and asks, “So, how have you been enjoying life as a werewolf and as a Luna?” I smile, “Honestly, it’s taken some adjusting, and at first I was overwhelmed at the thought of being a Luna, but taking care of the pack seems to come very naturally. When I see someone hurt or in need like I have an instinct to care for them no matter what it takes.” He smiles, “I always thought you would be a good Luna.” “Yeah,” I sigh, “But even with that thought I still wasn’t enough because you still rejected me.”
