You know, I had been tempted to not even go to the dance. The only reason I did was because my mom already had bought my outfit and it was a masquerade and there would be a ton of people there making it harder to trace a scent. I really didn’t want to spend the evening with Alexander and Haley hounding me.

My mom kept reassuring me that I might meet my mate here and I doubted that she was right. I haven’t told her about that tropical scent I keep smelling that I think belongs to my mate. Every time I find the scent it suddenly disappears and I’m unable to discover who it belongs to.

Lately, Haley keeps hanging on my arm as if we are a couple. I hate it if my mate ever saw this behavior, I can imagine what she the pain she would see from seeing this. I’ve tried to get Haley to stop by being nice because she is the daughter of the Alpha at the Starry Shadow pack and that pack and mine have always had a small rivalry. It’s hard not to shove her away from me. Especially when she gets aroused around me… the overwhelming scent makes me almost gag every time.

Lately, Alexander, the upcoming Alpha of Starry Shadows keeps trying to push for an alliance through marriage. I don’t know how many times I need to refuse for them to get it through their skulls. I’m still young and I have tons of time to find my rightful mate and Luna. I’m beginning to lose my patience with both of them.

I already have my high school diploma- literally the only reason I’m at this school is due to my mom. I had to grow up fast due to my dad passing away and the pack needing me to take over as Alpha. Eric and Hugh did as well because their dads died then too so we’ve all always stuck together.

While I went away for training my mom stayed Luna and the newly appointed Beta helped take care of the pack. When I turned 18, I came back home with Eric and Hugh and we were all ready to take our roles in the pack. But my mom insisted on us going to this high school for at least a month to see if we would find our mates.

Eric and Hugh both have found their mates quickly. And I’m glad they did and I’m happy for them. The girls are beautiful and the only issue that came about was that they belonged to Starry Shadows and due to the rivalry Alexander was not pleased with us taking the girls. He doesn’t seem fond of any of us since I refuse his alliance terms.

I push my thoughts of that drama out of my head and get in the car with Eric and Hugh. Eric is driving and Hugh keeps going on about how maybe I’ll find my Luna tonight. I ignore his ramblings and soon enough it turns into both of the guys daydreaming of their mates.

I roll my eyes at them, but truthfully, I'm envious of them. I would love to be daydreaming and counting down the moment of when I'll see my mate again. If I'm honest with myself, I hope that I’ll be like them soon.

We pull up to the venue and I head inside because I don’t want to be near them when they have their little reunion with their mates.

I go inside and the music is blaring. It hurts my sensitive ears and makes me wish that I brought earplugs. I look around in search of any woman that could potentially stir my wolf and make me drawn to her. I don’t smell the tropical scent so I have little hope that my mate could be here.

I see a girl walking out of the bathroom and she stumbles and is about to fall. I use my wolf speed and catch her arm. Tingles and warmth swarms through me and her scent fills my nose making my mouth water.

My wolf howls: MATE!!!

I smile brightly and I’m filled with lust at the sight of her. She is gorgeous.

I ask, “Are you ok?”

I didn’t realize until after I spoke how breathy my voice sounded… I hope she didn’t think I sounded weird. I want her to be impressed by me, I should’ve been more confident.

I take a deep breath, loving her scent, but I did notice one thing… she’s human. Definitely human. Which means the likelihood of her knowing anything about my kind is slim to none.

Can she feel the tingles and warmth I feel?

Is she feeling drawn to me the way the bond is making me drawn to her?

She stutters and a slight blush goes across her cheeks, “Y-yeah I’m fine. Th-thanks for catching me.”

I grin, it’s so damn cute that she's blushing and I say, “It’s my pleasure. Would you care to dance?”

She nods slowly and looks at me hesitantly but I pull her out to the dance floor before she can think too much about it. It's one dance and I'm sure our bond will make her desire to be around me more. I want to speak with her, but the music is so loud I know she wouldn't hear me. 

After a couple fast songs, I motion for her to stay here and I go request a slow song. The DJ was human, but I slipped my Alpha tone into my request making it impossible for him to refuse my request. When a human hears our Alpha tone, they don’t recognize that’s what it is they just feel compelled to do what has been told.

He switches the song immediately and I rush back to my lady. I see her in her yellow dress, and she looks like a fairy. I smile softly as I move towards her. I grab her arm gently and tug her towards me so I can hold her close. I lean down to her ear and my lips graze it as I say, “You never told me your name.”

I feel the chill run down her spine, and it makes me grin. She looks up at me and my eyes get dark with lust as I have this overwhelming need to kiss her.

My lips lightly touch hers when she pulls out of my grasp. My wolf whimpers at the loss of contact. And she says, “I’m sorry.”

She turns around running away and I know I have to follow her.

As I chase after her, I mind link both Hugh and Eric: She’s my mate. Help me find her- now!

I run out the door and look around, but I don’t see her anywhere. There are so many scents swirling around it’s hard to focus on hers. I’m sure I would be able to if I turned into my wolf, but since she doesn’t know about our kind if she saw me it would be sure to freak her out.

I hear footsteps behind me, and I turn around to see Hugh and Eric and their mates. Olive steps forward and says, “She’s your mate?”

I nod in confirmation and she looks towards Britt and Olive says, “We’re her best friends. We know where she lives.”

I nod, “Let’s go, now.”

Britt speaks up, “Hold on a second.”

I couldn’t suppress the growl that slipped through my lips. Britt shows her neck in submission and Hugh growls at me letting me know he's upset with me for making her submit and Britt says, “Alpha, I’m not trying to overstep any bounds. But Cal is human, and she doesn’t know about us. This might scare her.”

Cal… the sound of her name made my wolf purr with delight.

I sigh, I don’t want to scare her off. I say, “I need to see her. She ran from me and I don’t know why.”

Britt and Olive look at each other and I see their eyes glaze over showing that they were mind linking. Olive nods as she turns towards me, “Let’s go.”
