CHAPTER 12: THE UNEXPECTED VISITOR

723 Words
The morning air in Rome was crisp, carrying the scent of freshly baked croissants from the corner bakery. Isabella sat at her kitchen table, sketchbook open but untouched. The revelations from yesterday still echoed in her mind. Alejandro had shared his past, and while it hadn’t been easy to hear, she found herself feeling closer to him than ever. A knock at the door pulled her from her thoughts. “Coming!” she called, setting her pencil down. Opening the door, Isabella froze. Standing there was a man she did not recognize, dressed in a tailored suit, with an intensity in his eyes that immediately made her uneasy. “Good morning, Miss Romano,” he said smoothly. “My name is Marco. May I come in?” Isabella hesitated. “Who… who are you?” “I’m someone who needs to speak with Alejandro,” Marco replied, his tone polite yet firm. Her heart skipped a beat. “Alejandro? He’s not here right now.” Marco’s gaze sharpened. “Then I will wait.” Something about him made Isabella tense. She stepped aside reluctantly, allowing him in, but keeping a safe distance. “Sit,” he said, gesturing to a chair. “This won’t take long.” Isabella sat, curiosity and unease warring within her. “What is this about?” Marco exhaled, running a hand over his face. “I know this may be alarming, but I have information that concerns Alejandro. His past… it’s catching up to him, and you may be involved whether you realize it or not.” Isabella’s pulse quickened. “What do you mean?” “I’m here to warn you,” he said carefully. “There are people from Alejandro’s previous life—business associates, some enemies—that could threaten anyone close to him. You’ve seen a glimpse of this already, haven’t you? The letters, the photograph…” She swallowed hard. “Yes… but I thought it was all behind him. I thought he left that life behind.” Marco’s expression softened slightly. “He did. But some things cannot be erased so easily. That is why I came. You need to be cautious. Alejandro cares for you, yes, but being close to him puts you at risk.” Isabella’s mind spun. Fear and frustration mingled. Why now? Why me? “I… I don’t know what to do,” she admitted. Marco stood. “You need to talk to him. Tell him you’ve been warned. Trust him to make the right decisions, but don’t ignore the danger.” Before she could respond, the sound of footsteps in the hall startled her. Alejandro appeared, slightly out of breath. “Isabella? Marco?” Marco stepped back, allowing Alejandro to approach. “I just came to warn her,” Marco said firmly, his eyes locking on Alejandro. Alejandro’s expression darkened, but he nodded. “Thank you,” he said, then turned to Isabella. “Are you alright?” “I… I think so,” she replied, trying to steady herself. “But I don’t like secrets. Not anymore.” Alejandro took her hands gently. “You won’t have to worry. I promise, no more secrets between us. But some parts of my past… I cannot control. I can only protect you the best I can.” Isabella’s eyes filled with a mix of concern and determination. “Then let me help you. Let me face this with you.” Alejandro smiled softly, relief evident in his eyes. “I was hoping you’d say that.” Marco gave a curt nod. “Be careful,” he said, and left as quickly as he had appeared, leaving a lingering tension behind. Alejandro and Isabella sat together in silence for a moment, letting the reality of the warning settle. “You know,” Alejandro said finally, squeezing her hands, “no matter what comes, I want you by my side. We’ll face it together. All of it.” Isabella leaned into him, drawing comfort from his presence. “I’m not going anywhere.” The rain had stopped outside, but a different kind of storm lingered in the air—a storm that promised danger, challenges, and tests of trust. And yet, for the first time, Isabella felt ready. Ready to face whatever came for them… as long as they were together.
