CHAPTER 4: STARLIGHT IN TRASTEVERE

616 Words
The night air in Rome was alive with a gentle warmth, carrying the scent of roasted chestnuts and freshly baked bread. Alejandro led Isabella through winding cobblestone alleys until they reached Trastevere, the vibrant heart of Roman nightlife. The streets buzzed with laughter, glowing lanterns swung above narrow passageways, and cafes spilled music into the night. Isabella, usually guarded, found herself smiling more than she had in months. “Are you always this confident, Alejandro?” she teased as he confidently wove through the crowd. He glanced at her with a playful smirk. “Confident? No. Determined? Always.” She raised an eyebrow. “Determined to what?” “To make you laugh again,” he answered without hesitation. For a moment, Isabella froze. The words struck a part of her heart she often kept hidden—buried beneath her brushes, canvases, and solitude. She looked away, her cheeks warming, but Alejandro noticed the faint smile she tried to hide. They eventually stopped at a small piazza where a local guitarist played beneath the starlight. Alejandro placed a coin in the musician’s case, then turned back to Isabella with a mischievous glint in his eye. “Dance with me,” he said. Isabella blinked, stunned. “Here? In front of everyone?” “Yes. Here. Now. In front of everyone.” She shook her head, laughing nervously. “I don’t dance with strangers.” “Then don’t think of me as a stranger,” he replied, taking her hand gently. The guitar’s melody swelled, and before Isabella could protest further, Alejandro guided her into a slow, easy rhythm. She stumbled at first, awkward and self-conscious, but his steady hand and calm confidence carried her. “Relax,” he whispered. “The world isn’t watching. It’s only us.” And strangely enough, it felt true. The crowd blurred into shadows, the laughter became distant, and Isabella felt as though they were the only two souls alive under the Roman night sky. Her laughter broke free, genuine and unrestrained, as Alejandro twirled her lightly before pulling her close again. Their eyes met, and for a fleeting moment, the entire universe seemed to pause. When the music ended, applause rose from the small crowd that had gathered, startling Isabella back to reality. She quickly stepped away, covering her flushed face with her hands. “You’re impossible,” she said, trying to compose herself. Alejandro chuckled softly. “And yet, you’re still here.” They walked along the Tiber River afterward, the city lights shimmering across the water. Isabella finally asked the question that had been tugging at her since the Spanish Steps. “Why Rome? Why now?” Alejandro’s steps slowed. He looked ahead, his expression momentarily shadowed. “Sometimes, we find ourselves in places we don’t plan… as if fate writes the map before we even see it.” “Fate?” Isabella repeated, half-curious, half-teasing. He nodded. “Do you believe in it?” She hesitated. “I’m not sure. But tonight… feels a little like it.” They fell into a thoughtful silence, their footsteps echoing softly against the old stone bridges. At last, Alejandro stopped, turning to her. “Isabella Romano,” he said in a voice both firm and gentle, “whatever tomorrow brings, promise me one thing.” She frowned slightly. “What?” “Don’t close your heart too quickly.” His words lingered in the air between them, mysterious and tender. Isabella’s heart beat faster, though she couldn’t explain why. And as they parted that night, neither of them could deny it—something had begun, something powerful, something neither of them had been looking for… but both desperately needed.
