Scarlett looked at the elegant gift box in Wesley's hand, feeling more confused than anything.
'Is he planning to give me a gift?'
But she felt this was unlikely.
Wesley pushed the beautifully wrapped box towards Scarlett.
"Open it and see if you like it."
Scarlett didn't open the box. Instead, her confusion deepened.
"Why are you giving me a gift?"
Wesley's mesmerizing eyes locked onto Scarlett.
In a deep, alluring voice, he replied, "Your smile is beautiful."
Scarlett's eyes brightened for a moment but quickly dimmed again.
"Thank you for the compliment, but I don't need your gift. I've told you I don't like owing anyone."
She stood up, ready to leave.
Wesley stood up to stop her, his hand resting on her shoulder.
"Aren't you curious to see what I got you? Then decide whether to accept it or not?"
Scarlett just countered. "Do you even know what I want?"
Wesley smiled. Then, he pulled Scarlett into his arms.
"You only want to make Patrick regret it, right?"
Scarlett heard this and instantly understood why Wesley treated her this way.
Without hesitation, she pushed him away. "You're right. What I want is for Patrick to regret everything. I know exactly what you're doing, doing this to make me trust you. Do you really think I'd still believe in love after what I've been through?"
Wesley looked down, and what he said surprised Scarlett. "Yes, that's exactly what I think. I'm doing this so that you'll trust me."
Scarlett felt an indescribable sense of disappointment, though she looked emotionless.
"I don't need you involved in my affairs anymore."
She walked past Wesley, intent on leaving.
But she had only taken a few steps when Wesley grabbed her arm.
"You agreed to partner with me."
Scarlett didn't even turn her head and just said coldly, "I didn't refuse before, but that doesn't mean I agreed. I've never needed anyone's help."
Then, she shook off Wesley's hand.
Wesley watched Scarlett walk away, his expression complicated.
"You can refuse, but you understand the cost of exposing your identity. I'm not threatening you. It's just a fact."
Scarlett knew Wesley was right, but partnering with him could be more dangerous than exposing her identity.
With this in mind, she asked, "We're just strangers. Why would I work with you? More importantly, why should I trust a stranger like you?"
Then, without any hesitation, she left.
Wesley didn't expect her to have such a bad impression of him.
Leaving the upscale restaurant, Scarlett felt anything but calm.
She thought that Wesley's recent unusual behavior towards her might prompt him to chase after her.
But reality proved she was overthinking.
'How could a man like Wesley, rich, handsome, and powerful, be interested in me, a woman who hasn't even finalized her divorce? Moreover, I must always remember that Wesley approached me for his benefit. I couldn't let myself get caught up in it.'
Just as she was about to sleep that night, she received a message from her subordinate.
She was asked to personally investigate a case, a particularly tricky one.
Dressed in a black suit, she rushed to the crime scene.
The victim held considerable influence in Aerionia, and if she didn't handle this, it could threaten her position as governor of the state.
The scene was almost bloodstained, and most strikingly, the victim was holding a ring.
The blue gemstone gleamed under the light, and its intricate orchid pattern was particularly eye-catching.
The design seemed familiar to her.
'Where had I seen it before?'
Then it hit her. Wesley's business card and the ring he wore also had this pattern.
But she couldn't conclude that Wesley was involved based solely on the ring's design.
So, she had to investigate personally.
She decided to wait near Wesley's company, posing as an ordinary person.
She was there to secretly investigate the matter.
But even after she waited until ten at night, Wesley didn't leave the company.
She wondered if Wesley had even come to the company that day.
Usually, Wesley would show up at crucial times, but she didn't actually know his whereabouts, making the investigation more challenging.
About five minutes later, she finally saw Wesley leaving the building.
He was accompanied by five or six bodyguards and an assistant.
Because of the distance, she couldn't hear their conversation.
As they got closer, she began to catch what they were saying.
"Mr. Kingsley, the head of the Lawrence family, was assassinated two hours ago. I heard the governor of Aerionia is personally investigating the case. This governor is extremely secretive, and we couldn't track her movements."
Wesley's eyes were deep, making it hard to tell what he was thinking.
'Is this case really so important to her?'
"Ignore it. No need to bother with it."
Scarlett wondered whether Wesley had anything to do with the Lawrence family head's death.
'Why did I hope it wasn't related? Why didn't I want to be Wesley's enemy?'
But in this situation, it wasn't something she could control.
At that moment, Wesley had the strange feeling of being watched and looked around.
His gaze fell on the car Scarlett was in.
Scarlett, through the car window, met Wesley's gaze.
Her heart began to race.
'Wesley starts walking towards her car. Does he really notice me? Why am I so nervous? If he found me here, how would I explain? For some reason, I don't want him to discover that I am here to investigate him. Even though I am using a different identity, given his abilities, if he discovered I am the governor of Aerionia, how would I handle it?'
Wesley's footsteps sounded like they were pressing on Scarlett's heart, making her more and more nervous.
He walked past Scarlett's car and stopped in front of another one.
Suddenly, Scarlett felt a wave of disappointment wash over her.
'I had been overthinking. That car must belong to one of his lovers, which is why he walked in that direction. I already said I wouldn't have any more dealings with him, so why am I thinking this way?'
But then she heard Wesley say to his men at that moment.
"Go check if there are any suspicious cars over there. I just had the feeling I was being followed."
His bodyguards and assistant nodded and went to check.
After they walked a distance, Scarlett heard Wesley say, "I know you're here. It's not safe. Go home."
Scarlett heard this and felt touched instantly.
'He had sent his men away to give me a way out. But why did he do that? I never treated him kindly.'
As she thought about this, she decided to drive away first.
Just then, her phone buzzed with a message.
