VALERIE I woke up with a start. My body was heavy, the air thick around me, and when I took in the surrounding, nothing made sense. The soft rustling of leaves around me was unfamiliar and calming all at once. The air smelled sweet, a blend of blooming flowers and damp earth. My heart raced, but my mind couldn’t quite make sense of where I was. I wasn’t in my room, that was for sure.
