VALERIE
A crowd had begun gathering already and I could hear them whisper among themselves.
“Isn’t that Valerie?” Someone in the crowd asked.
“Yeah, the slave girl,” Another commented.
“What is she doing in here?”
I stared on glumly, unable to say a word and after a while, I caught sight of the last of the triplets, Evans approaching from a corner. He had his arm around a girl’s waist and they laughed about something as they walked up to me.
A few meters away from where I stood, I could recognize her immediately. It was his girlfriend, Ellen and she was the one that had disguised as a worker in the mall to assist me. They had planned it, just to embarrass me.
But why did they hate me so much? What had I done to deserve such a treatment from the triplets?
As though he was reading my mind, Kyle walked up to me and whispered in my ears.
“What were you thinking? That I would waste my father’s hard earned fortune on a lowlife, a worthless t**t like you, just like that?”
“Don’t do this to me,” I pleaded, with tears in my eyes. “I could get into a lot of trouble.”
“You should have thought about that when you were picking stuff that you couldn’t afford,” Ellen chipped in.
I shot her a murderous glance. If I had the power, I would have killed her with my bare hands!
“I’ll forgive you,” Kyle announced to everyone’s hearing. “I’ll cover all your expenses, just because I have a good heart, but next time, don’t go shopping for what you can’t afford.”
Everyone cheered for him, like he was some sort of superhero, and almost immediately, he produced the credit card that Alpha Marion had given Chris earlier, and handed it over to the cashier.
“That’s very generous of you, sir,” The cashier said with a smile on her face.
She stared me down for a second and shook her head in pity, before clearing me to go.
Kyle took hold of the trolley and rolled it outside the mall, while I walked behind him too ashamed to even speak.
As soon as we got out of the mall, Ellen and Alicia were all over my trolley, selecting what they wanted from it. At that point, I didn’t even care anymore. I just wanted to get back home, crawl in my bed and cry my eyes out for the rest of the day.
They rummaged through my stuff for a long time and when they were done, it was just a box of Muncho cereal that was left for me.
“Ungrateful little witch,” Ellen hissed. “We left you a box of cereal and you can’t even say thank you.”
“Thank you,” I muttered.
“Or did you really think I picked any of those stuff because of you?” Ellen chuckled.
“I hope you get a life before the day runs out,” Alicia chipped in. “And by that, I mean a mate as broke and nerdy as you, so you can get the f**k out of my boyfriend’s life for good!”
She pulled me by the hair, so hard that I fell to the floor in pain and the two girls laughed.
“That’s enough,” Chris grunted. “And she could do with two more boxes of those.”
Without even bothering to ask for permission, he took two extra boxes of Munchos and threw them in the car.
“Get in, Valerie. It’s getting late already.”
The girls sulked as I got in the car, and Chris sped off immediately. All through our drive home, none of us said a word to each other. Kyle and Evans were busy chatting away on their phones, while Chris drove in silence, occasionally stealing a glance at me.
I could tell that Chris didn’t approve fully of their prank, but he hated me equally and didn’t do anything to stop it.
The car screeched to a halt at the driveway and I sighted Alpha Marion in the distance. Kyle turned to me immediately and grabbed my arm roughly.
“Hey four eyes,” Kyle growled. “If you breathe a word of what happened today to the Alpha, I promise that this wouldn’t be just your worst birthday, but also your last."
He let go of my hand and started towards the pack house. I couldn’t tell if it was an empty threat or not, and I didn’t really want to find out. All I had to do was smile and pretend I had a great day.
Just as I had expected, Alpha Marion was waiting for me at the doorstep. There was a wide grin on his face, and as much as I longed to tell him how my day really went, I couldn’t.
“Just cereals,” Alpha Marion frowned, his eyes fixed on the bag in my hand.
“The boys urged me to get as much as I wanted,” I lied. “But I was a bit shy.”
“I’m glad you got something for yourself though,” He smiled. “You realize that this might be your last day with us, Valerie. You’ve served this family so well and treated my sons like your brothers. I just wanted to show a little bit of appreciation before some guy came running along, claiming you as his mate.”
I managed a weak smile, as the Alpha spoke, but the truth was that I doubted I even had a mate. If I did, I knew he was going to reject me. I wasn’t worthy of anyone’s love or attention, not with the way I looked or dressed.
“Thank you for making me feel at home” I muttered. "I would never forget your kindness to me."
Alpha Marion smiled and I walked through the open door into the pack house.
Dinner was my favorite - spaghetti and grilled turkey, but I had long lost my appetite. I headed straight for the stairs and once I had gotten to my room, I locked the door shut and allowed my tired body drop to the soft mattress.
Today was officially the worst day in my life and I owed it to the triplets. I sighed as I imagined how much better life would be for me with a mate, a companion, someone to call my own for the rest of my life.
I stared at the huge clock on the wall in my room. It was already a few minutes past 8 and my mate had not found me yet. It was pointless even hoping for a savior. No one was coming to save me. The mere thought of spending the rest of my life babysitting those annoying triplets made me shudder and I curled up on my bed. I said a short prayer to the moon goddess before I finally drifted off to sleep.
It was the intoxicating scent of fresh mints that woke me up eventually. I checked the time and I discovered that I had barely slept for thirty minutes.
But what was that scent and why was it so appealing to me?
I straightened up in my bed as I tried to figure out what it was and then it hit me.
"Mate!" I screamed in excitement.
I could feel my wolf dancing within me and my temperature shot up at once. A different scent hit my nose, stronger than the first one and I figured whoever he was, he was nearby, and probably waiting for me.
I jumped up, excited and threw a navy green sweater on before racing down the stairs and out of the pack house.
The night was dark and there was not a single star in the sky. Even the moon had disappeared beneath the thick black clouds. The only source of light in the lawn ahead was a pair of gleaming red eyes - and that was where the scent was coming from.
My mate was standing at the lawn just across the pack house.
I could barely control my ragged breathing as I doubled over to meet him. After so many years of suffering, I had finally found him - my knight in shining armor, the man who was going to save me from those triplets.
I stopped a few meters before him, and even though the surrounding was pitch black, I could feel his eyes boring through my soul.
"Mate?" He growled.
Slowly, the excitement that had been bubbling all over me turned to shock, and then, fear, and then, horror.
No way. The moon goddess had to be playing games with me.
He stepped out of the shadows and the bright headlight from a car speeding by illuminated his face for a brief second, to confirm my worst fear. It was Kyle.
"No, no, no," I repeated over and over in my head. "This can't be happening."
The sound of the nearby bushes rustling jolted me and I watched as Chris and Evans approached me. The scent emanating from their bodies was even stronger than Kyle's and it was at that moment, the sickening reality began to settle in.
I was not just mated to Kyle. I was mated to Chris and Evans as well. I was mated to the triplet bullies.
