Chapter 8

An uninviting lonely atmosphere grasped Kelly's whole being as she opened the door and stepped in. Everywhere felt so cold and harsh, it was as if the house knew something was going on with its inhabitants. Kelly almost ran back outside, it was nothing like she had experienced before. Is it just me or does this house feels different? - she thought to herself as she dumped herself into the couch. She gave the living room a quick scan and then slowly turned to the other side. The door creaked open just then and she quickly jumped up in high hopes that it was William. Maybe he was only playing a prank on her and was now back home to clear the air - this was her thought as she hurried to her feet. She was wrong. No one was there. She left the door open and the breeze must have blown it open. Slowly, she made her way to the door and made sure it was properly locked this time. She felt a stray tear making its way down her face and she quickly wiped it off. "What exactly is wrong with you Kelly Meyers? What are you doing? How could you still be eagerly waiting for him to come back after the way he treated you? Gosh, you should be so embarrassed of yourself right now." A voice deep down inside her cautioned her. It sounded so firm and funny that she couldn't help but smile. The little smile turned into a more bright one and it soon turned into a cracking laugh. "I don't think I sound that way!!" She said to herself amidst the cracking laughter. For a moment there, she forgot all about her sadness and heartbreak. That was her first genuine laugh since William broke the terrible news to her. This went on for a full minute and before she knew what was happening, she was already far gone unto the dreamland. She slept off and soundly like a baby with no worries. It was the loud ringtone of her phone that woke her back to reality four hours later. She picked the phone from the table and Milky's face lit up the screen. Milky is Kelly's nephew, her sister, Freya's son. He is three years old and real name is Miller, he earned the nickname, Milky, when he was just learning to speak. Both his parents, took this stage with utmost seriousness as they both wanted him to say their name first, especially Freya. She would always tried to say her name to him so he would easily catch it. Somehow, Miller must have found out about his parents' little competition and then decided to take a different turn entirely. His first word was his own very name -Miller, although, pronounced in his own baby language, -Milky. As luck would have it, Kelly was present when he first said this and that was how he got the nickname. Kelly loves him like he was his own child and Milky also reciprocated the love. He enjoys the company of his aunt so much and always craves to be with her at every opportunity... "Hello Kelly..." "Aunty Kelly!!!" Milky interrupted his mother before she could even start the conversation. Kelly figured he was either the one holding the phone or probably screaming out his lungs. That was how loud he was. "My cute cute Milky Miller, how are you my darling?" Kelly said in a very sweet and playful tone which made Milky giggle with much happiness. "At this rate, I think he will soon move in with you. He is never this cooperative with me." Freya said in a pretend angry tone. Kelly got it and played along too. "What's that I hear in mommy's voice, my cute Milky Miller?" Kelly asked while cueing him in for a chorused answer. "Jealousy!!!" They both said out loud and then burst into laughter. Freya joined them too. "Alright, alright, you guys win." Freya chimed in. "You never had a chance anyway, that was why we went easy on you." Kelly replied playfully. "I know right, I missed your calls last night, is everything okay?" Freya asked but Kelly didn't answer immediately. She could hear some background noises and she figured Freya must be attending to Milky. "Uhnnn... It's a long story, actually, not so long but you seem a little busy at the moment so why don't we talk about it later." Kelly finally replied when the noise had reduced to the barest minimum. "Busy, no, I'm not. I was just fixing Milky's seatbelt. You know how he always is with it." Freya explained. Milky never liked the seatbelt, he feels its too uncomfortable and would always pull it to the side or try to get it off completely. "Are you driving?" Kelly asked. "Yes, we're on our way to your place. Milky wouldn't give me a breathing space since I mentioned in the morning that I missed your calls. And since we couldn't make it to the party last night, why not just kill two birds with a stone?" Freya explained while Kelly smiled. "William must be fuming with anger right now? I set a timer birthday text message for him. It was suppose to go off by 12:00am on the dot, only to realise that I set it for this morning and not yesterday. You need to see how I screamed this morning when I discovered. Anthony couldn't stop laughing. But not to worry, we come bearing peace offerings. I'm sure his anger would melt away in an instant when he sees the gift I got him." Freya let out with so much enthusiasm while Kelly remained silent. How could she tell her things well no more the way she thought it was? It would break her so much. "It's a..." Milky almost let out the cat out of the bag if not for the timely intervention of his mother who quickly shut him up. "Do not ruin the surprise Milky Miller!!!" Freya quickly stepped in. She intentionally added the name part do he wouldn't feel bad.
