Kelly couldn't believe her eyes as she stood still in the middle of the closet. William wasn't home, neither were his things. He packed everything without leaving a pin behind. Kelly didn't know what to do as her head was completely blank at that moment. Even if she was asked what her name was, she probably wouldn't know. That was how clueless she was.
She did a slow spin around the closet one more time just to be sure she wasn't mistaken. She wasn't. William had really moved out. Tears flowed freely down her face as she gently turned back and made her way back into the bedroom. She jumped carelessly in the bed with her whole face wet with tears. She wasn't even sobbing or feeling a thing. Everything was total blankness. She wanted to think about what she could have possibly done to warrant such harsh treatment from Wiliam, but no thoughts were forthcoming.
After lying there in total silence for about half an hour with no headway, she got up decided to call Andrea. Probably talking to her best friend would help her out. Her phone was in her bag which she had flung in a corner when she walked in and suspected a foul play. Immediately she got back from the party and entered, she noticed something different about the living room. Some things were no longer there. A closer and deliberate look, and she noticed that everything missing are all William's things. Kelly didn't want to believe the picture that popped up in her head so she flung her bag into a corner and raced into the bedroom, right into the closet where she got yet another shock of the night.
Slowly, she grabbed her bag from the floor and took her phone from it. As she was about to put a call through to Andrea, she noticed a note on the stool adjacent her. At first, she didn't read meaning into it but on a second thought, she did. William is quite fond of leaving messages for her through notes. He mostly leaves for work very early in the morning when Kelly is still in bed. He wouldn't want to disturb her and then leave a note behind for her instead. His messages were mostly good morning hellos, love quotes and other romantic stuffs.
Thinking it was one of those, she took the note and read. She was totally wrong. It wasn't anything love related, in fact, it was the total opposite. William had repeated everything he told her at the party but with some little additions. He needed space to think things through and was only going to leave home for a few days but the party opened his eyes...
"I had some time to think at the party and I can now see that leaving for a few days isn't what I need.
I can't do this anymore Kelly, I can't. I've tried but it's just not working so I'm leaving. I'm so sorry but I have to.
I hope you can understand,
Love..."
"Love!!!" Kelly screamed so loud as she tore the note into tiny pieces.
"How dare he call me Love after showing me such huge wickedness?" She screamed out again as she crouched over and started tearing the already torn pieces into tinier bits. She was consumed with so much anger and needed to vent out. When there was no more piece to tear into more tinier bits, she stood up and went back to calling Andrea.
She tried severally but none connected. The more she tried, the more frustrated she became. When none connected, she then decided to call Freya, her elder sister. It was as if the whole universe was against her. Freya's line wasn't connecting either despite trying numerous times.
"This is too much for me... What have I done to deserve this?" Kelly muttered to herself as she burst into tears. This time, it was a real and loud sobbing. Just in a night, she got dumped by her boyfriend and he moved out too without her suspecting a thing. Six years of relationship and togetherness gone down the drain in her blink of an eye. It would have probably been a different story if they have been having issues prior to his sudden decision to breakup. They never had an issue. They weren't even fight or had a pending misunderstanding.
William showed no sign that he was no more interested in her. Not even once. He has always been so invested in the relationship just as much as her. He had jumped at Kelly's decision to move together without thinking twice. The six years they were together was full of immense love, care and passionate thoughtfulness. Occasionally they would have a quarrel but it was nothing they couldn't resolve. William wouldn't even go to bed with her still mad at him. He would make sure he settles and clears whatever it was before calls it a night. How then do someone like that just wake up and decide to leave? How do people go from being madly in love to wanting nothing to do with the other person? All these and other thoughts rushed through Kelly's mind as she laid on the couch trying to make sense of what was happening to her.
She took her phone and tried calling William. She thought maybe if she hears it directly from the horse's mouth, things would make sense a bit and she would be able to make peace with her fate. William didn't answer the phone the two times she called. She wanted to call a third time but later didn't. She wasn't going to exhaust the little self respect she has left.
"In the end, it's always just you against the world." She said to herself as she made her way to the kitchen and straight to refrigerator. Her boyfriend left, her best friend wasn't available and her sister wasn't either, so in the end, it was just her against whatever life had just thrown at her.
She grabbed a bottle of champagne, and two other wines. She was going to drown her sadness in alcohol instead of beating herself up and waiting for an imaginary angel to save her. She was already back in the living room and seated when she noticed she had forgotten to get a glass. But then again, who needs a glass to get drunk? A gulp after the other, Kelly downed the three bottles till she got drunk and slept off right on the tiles...
It was the ray of light from the window that woke her in the morning. She held her hand over her eyes as she tried to get up so she can pull the curtain. As she got up, she felt the onset of a hammering headache. It was so intense that she had to hold her head with her two hands. She could no longer go to the window as she sat back and leaned back in the couch.
Hangovers are her worst nightmare and that's why she shies away from drinking. Andrea wouldn't even let her go too close to a bottle as she knows she would be the one saddled with the responsibility if she gets drunk. Unfortunately, she wasn't there this time to stop her from getting drunk.
Kelly's phone lit up just then which made her grab it to check what it was. Her eyes got do big and she immediately jumped on her feet when she saw it.
Xavier, her boss has called over twenty times, Andrea too, and a few others from the restaurant had called too. Kelly knew she was in for a bigger trouble. How was she going to explain that she missed a work engagement just because her boyfriend left her? Xavier would never listen! - Kelly thought to herself as she hurried into the room.
Two companies were having major events and the restaurant where she worked was contracted to cater for both events. Being the sous chef, Xavier asked Kelly to manage one while he would handle the other. Of course, Kelly had it in mind and had even made arrangements with the chefs that were assigned to assist her. She also already sorted the parts that she could the previous day before leaving work for Wiliam's surprise party, which apparently turned into her worst nightmare.
He is the one who left and she is the one suffering from the aftermath - Kelly thought to herself as she hurriedly lathered the shower gel all over her body.
In all her years of work experience as a chef, that has never happened to her. She never missed a work deadline. And if not for the breakup hurt which led her to drinking, she never would have overslept and forgot about work. Ten minutes after and she was out of the bathroom. She hurried into the closet, grabbed the first two piece outfit that caught her eyes, threw it on and then dashed out of the house...
