CHAPTER FIVE ~7 A.M~ Ring…ring… Genevieve woke up by the sound of her ringtone. Her heart skipped when she saw the caller ID. Adrian. “Hello sir” she answered sleepily. “You have less than an hour to get here.” Adrian said. “You'll be working closely with me today, and we need to have a discussion later.” Before she could reply, the call ended. Genevieve sprang out of bed. She rushed into the bathroom, took her bath and threw on a rumpled T-shirt and a pair of jeans. Grabbing her bag, she called a cab. After a short drive, the cab parked at the front of the company. She handed him three euros and headed out. “Madam,” the driver called her back. “The money you paid isn't enough.” “What?” Genevieve asked, confused. “Isn't it three euros?” “It has increased to six euros,” The driver replied flatly. “I don't have such money on me,” she said anxiously. “And why didn't you tell me before driving off?” “The price change is everywhere. Pay my money, I have other passengers to pick.” The driver snapped. “I don't have it,” she said, panic creeping in. “What do you want me to do?” “How's that my problem?” he replied angrily. “Please sir,” Genevieve pleaded. “I really do not have it now. Maybe whenever we meet again, I'll pay the rest.” “Can you hear yourself?” the driver scoffed, stepping out of the car. “You must pay now.” “Please…” Genevieve dropped on her knees. “Do you think kneeling will change my mind?” the man yelled, drawing attention. People began to gather. “What's going on?” A woman asked. “This woman refused to pay her fare,” the driver said loudly. “She claimed she didn't know the price had changed. “I wasn't informed” Genevieve cried. “I'm not a thief. He didn't include the price when I called him” “You're lying!” The driver shouted. “Everyone knows the price has increased. She's a thief.” People began pointing fingers. Some even took out their phones to record. “Please…I'm not a thief,” Genevieve sobbed helplessly. “What's going on here?” A deep voice cut through the noise. The crowd parted instantly. Adrian stepped forward. Whispers and giggles filled the air, as the girls stared at him. “Why are you kneeling here,” Adrian said sternly, lifting Genevieve's chin. “when you've got work to do for me” Her eyes were swollen with tears. “Sir,” the driver said quickly. “This woman is equally a thief, she refused to pay the full fare.” “I'm not a thief” Genevieve whispered, crying uncontrollably. Adrian pulled out his wallet and tossed a ten euro note at the driver. “Don't ever cause a scene near my company over such a petty amount.” He warned coldly. Genevieve stood up as Adrian grabbed her wrist and dragged her away. His bodyguards shoved the giggling girls aside. Inside the building, Adrian kicked open his office door and released her hand roughed. “What was that?” He demanded. “I really didn't know the price inflated” she said shakily. “So you don't even have three euros to add? Are you really that poor?” Adrian mocked. Genevieve glared at him silently. “Thanks for paying, you can add it to what I owe you” She said, wiping her face with the back of her palm. “What about the package I'm meant to deliver?” Adrian pointed to a parcel. “Ask the receptionist for the address,” he said. “She'll give you transport fare. It's far.” “Oh” Genevieve muttered, picking up the parcel. “And… meet me at my private study room when you return.” He added. She nodded and left. On her way, her phone rang. Aria. “Babes, what happened this morning?” Aria asked immediately. “What do you mean?” Genevieve replied weakly. “Smokes, you're trending!” Aria exclaimed. “The girl who caused a scene at Adrian's company for not paying her cab driver. Some even labeled you a thief.” Aria read out. Genevieve sighed heavily. “I'm so done, Aria.” “What really happened? Aria asked gently. “I'll explain when I get back,” Genevieve said. “I need to deliver a parcel first.” “You've got a lot to explain,” Aria before ending the call. Genevieve exhaled deeply. She delivered the package and returned straight to Adrian's company. She found her way to his private study room. The room was dimly lit, shadows stretching across the walls. As she looked around. BANG!...
