Chapter 20:-A New Year's Beginning

It was December 31st, 2021, and the anticipation of a new year was in the air. Lily’s house was buzzing with the sounds of family, laughter, and the clinking of dishes as they celebrated together. She spent the day playing games with her cousins, catching up with relatives, and enjoying a delicious feast prepared by her mother. The energy was high, and Lily felt a warm, happy glow from being surrounded by loved ones.

As the evening wore on and her family started to wind down, Lily couldn’t help but think about Ethan. They had become such an important part of each other’s lives, and she wanted to start the new year with him, even if it was just through a screen.

When her parents went to bed early, Lily finally had a moment to herself. She grabbed her phone and texted Ethan.

Lily: Hey Ethan! How’s your New Year’s Eve going?

Ethan replied almost instantly.

Ethan: Hey Lily! It’s been good, just a quiet night with my family. How about you?

Lily: Same here. We had a big family gathering, and now everyone’s asleep. I wanted to spend the last few minutes of the year talking to you.

Ethan’s heart skipped a beat.

Ethan: I’m glad you messaged. I was hoping we could bring in the new year together too.

Lily smiled, feeling her heart flutter.

Lily: I can’t believe it’s almost 2022. This year has been so crazy, but meeting you has been the best part of it.

Ethan felt a rush of warmth.

Ethan: Same here, Lily. I never thought I’d find someone like you. It feels like time has just flown by.

Lily: Yeah, it does. It’s amazing how close we’ve gotten in such a short time.

They continued to chat, reminiscing about their journey over the past few months. As midnight approached, they both grew more excited.

Ethan: Okay, it’s almost time. Are you ready for the countdown?

Lily: Yes! Let’s do this!

They counted down together, their voices overlapping in a joyous chorus.

Lily and Ethan: Five, four, three, two, one! Happy New Year!

Lily: Happy New Year, Ethan! I’m so glad I’m starting this year with you.

Ethan: Happy New Year, Lily! Me too. I can’t wait to see what this year brings for us.

There was a moment of silence as they both absorbed the happiness of the moment.

Ethan: Lily, I know we’ve talked about a lot of things, but I just want to say that I hope we can stay close forever. You mean a lot to me.

Lily felt a rush of emotion.

Lily: Ethan, you mean a lot to me too. I can’t imagine not having you in my life. Here’s to many more years together.

Ethan: Absolutely. Here’s to us.

They shared a virtual toast, clinking imaginary glasses. The conversation took on a more intimate tone, and they found themselves venturing into territory they hadn’t explored before.

Ethan: You know, Lily, you’re really special to me. I’ve never felt this way about anyone.

Lily blushed, her heart beating faster.

Ethan: I’ve always been drawn to your kindness and strength. You’re an amazing person, Lily.

Lily felt butterflies in her stomach.

Ethan hesitated for a moment before speaking again.

Ethan: I’ve been thinking a lot about us lately. I know we started off as friends, but I feel like there’s something more between us. Do you feel that too?

Lily was taken aback by his directness but felt a warm glow inside her.

Lily: I… I do feel something, Ethan. It’s hard to explain, but I think I understand what you mean.
