Chapter 25: The Hunt Begins

The documents Kyle handed over were explosive. Samantha sat in their hideout, her eyes glued to the screen of Jaxon’s laptop as he pulled up file after file, each one more incriminating than the last. Liam had covered his tracks well, but not well enough. The paper trail led to offshore accounts, shady business dealings, and a network of corrupt officials. It was the proof they needed to bring him down, but it was also a dangerous revelation. “If this gets out,” Jaxon said, his voice low as he leaned back in his chair, “Liam’s going to lose everything. His money, his power… all gone.” Samantha nodded, but the gravity of their situation weighed heavily on her. “He’ll know it was us. As soon as he figures out we have this, we’re dead.” Jaxon turned to her, his eyes hard. “That’s why we can’t waste any time. We need to strike before he even realizes what’s happening.” Samantha clenched her fists, her mind racing. “But how? We can’t just hand this over to the police—they’ll be bought off or scared away. Liam’s influence is too deep.” Jaxon’s expression darkened. “We’ll need to go public. Leak it to the media, make it impossible for him to hide. Once it’s out in the open, even his connections won’t be able to save him.” The idea sent a shiver down Samantha’s spine. Going public would paint a target on their backs, but it was their only shot at taking Liam down for good. “Do you think Kyle’s information is enough to protect us?” Jaxon hesitated, his jaw tightening. “It’s a start, but we need more. We need something that’ll make everyone—his allies, his enemies—turn on him. If we can show he’s been screwing over the wrong people, they’ll do the job for us.” Samantha frowned, a knot forming in her stomach. “That sounds risky.” Jaxon gave her a grim smile. “It is. But it’s the only way.” The next few days were a blur of planning and secrecy. Jaxon and Samantha worked tirelessly, gathering more intel and making sure every detail of their plan was airtight. They couldn’t afford any mistakes. Kyle, true to his word, provided more information—names of powerful people Liam had double-crossed, details about secret deals gone wrong. It was a web of deceit that stretched further than Samantha had imagined, and with every new piece of the puzzle, the danger grew. Samantha found herself constantly looking over her shoulder, the feeling of being watched gnawing at her. Every creak in the floorboards, every flicker of movement outside their window set her on edge. She knew Liam wouldn’t go down without a fight, and the thought of him hunting them sent chills through her veins. Late one night, as she sat reviewing their final plans, Jaxon came up behind her, his hands resting on her shoulders. “You’ve been staring at that screen for hours,” he said softly. “You need a break.” Samantha sighed, leaning back into his touch. “I just… I can’t shake the feeling that something’s going to go wrong. Liam’s too smart to not have a backup plan.” Jaxon squeezed her shoulders gently, his voice soothing. “We’ve covered every angle. Liam’s not invincible, Sam. He’s made enemies, and once they see the proof we have, they’ll tear him apart.” Samantha turned to look at him, her eyes filled with worry. “But what about us? Once this is over, what happens to us?” Jaxon’s gaze softened, and he knelt in front of her, taking her hands in his. “We’ll disappear. Start fresh somewhere far away from all of this. Just you and me. No more running, no more danger.” Her heart ached at the thought, but she knew it wasn’t that simple. “Do you really think we’ll ever be free of this? Of him?” Jaxon’s jaw clenched, his eyes dark with determination. “I’ll make sure we are. I’ll do whatever it takes to protect you, Sam. I won’t let him hurt you again.” Samantha’s chest tightened with emotion, and she leaned forward, pressing her forehead against his. “I don’t know what I’d do without you.” Jaxon kissed her softly, his lips lingering on hers for a moment before he pulled back. “You won’t ever have to find out.” The day of the leak arrived faster than Samantha had anticipated. She felt a strange mix of excitement and dread as they prepared to release the damning evidence. Jaxon had arranged for the files to be sent to several major news outlets, as well as some key players in Liam’s world. The goal was simple: create a firestorm of chaos that Liam couldn’t control. Jaxon clicked a few final buttons on his laptop, his fingers moving with precise confidence. “It’s done,” he said, his voice steady but laced with tension. “In a few hours, the whole world will know what Liam’s been up to.” Samantha sat next to him, her heart racing. “And then what?” Jaxon met her gaze, his expression serious. “And then we wait. Liam will come after us, but we’ll be ready.” The anticipation was almost unbearable. They had spent so long planning for this moment, and now that it was finally happening, the reality of what they were about to face hit her like a freight train. Liam wouldn’t go down quietly. He would come for them with everything he had. Hours passed in agonizing silence. Samantha paced the small room, her nerves fraying with every minute that ticked by. Jaxon remained calm, his eyes never leaving the laptop screen as he monitored the news feeds and message boards. Then, the first headlines started to appear. "Criminal Empire Exposed: Corruption and Betrayal in Liam Black's Syndicate" "Leaked Documents Reveal Dark Underbelly of Charity Scandal" "Powerful Underworld Figure Faces Ruin as Secrets Unravel" Samantha’s breath caught in her throat as she watched the reports flood in. It was happening. Liam’s empire was crumbling before their eyes. But their victory was short-lived. Suddenly, Jaxon’s phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, his face paling as he read the message. “What is it?” Samantha asked, her voice filled with dread. Jaxon’s jaw tightened, and he stood, grabbing his gun from the table. “Liam knows. He’s coming for us.” Samantha’s blood ran cold. “How—?” “He’s got contacts in the media. Someone must’ve tipped him off,” Jaxon said, his voice low and urgent. “We need to move. Now.” Panic surged through Samantha as she quickly gathered her things, her hands trembling. “Where do we go?” Jaxon’s eyes were hard as steel. “I have a safe house outside the city. We’ll lay low there until we figure out our next move.” They moved quickly, slipping out of the building under the cover of night. Samantha’s heart pounded in her chest as they made their way to the car, every shadow feeling like a threat. Liam was out there, hunting them. And now, it was a race against time. As they sped down the dark, empty streets, Samantha glanced at Jaxon, her stomach churning with fear and uncertainty. “Do you think we’ll make it?” Jaxon’s grip on the steering wheel tightened, his jaw clenched with determination. “We will. I promised you, Sam—I’m not going to let him win.”
