Chapter 24: Dangerous Allies

The days that followed were filled with tension and planning. Samantha and Jaxon knew they had to act carefully. Liam was a powerful adversary, with connections that reached deep into the underworld, and exposing him would be a deadly game. They couldn’t afford to make any mistakes. Samantha found herself pacing in their temporary hideout—a rundown motel on the outskirts of the city. The peeling wallpaper and faint smell of mildew were far from comforting, but safety wasn’t a luxury they could enjoy anymore. Every second spent here felt like a second too long, but until they had enough information, they were stuck in this limbo. Jaxon sat at the small wooden table, his phone in hand, scrolling through endless files and contacts. His brow was furrowed in concentration, and the light from the lamp cast deep shadows across his face. He had barely slept, and Samantha knew that the pressure of keeping them both alive was wearing on him. “We need to move soon,” Jaxon said, not looking up from his phone. “Staying in one place for too long makes us vulnerable. Liam’s men are probably already scouring the city for us.” Samantha nodded, though the weight of it all made her feel like she was drowning. She stopped pacing and crossed her arms tightly over her chest. “Do you think Danny will actually come through? Or is he just stringing us along for his own amusement?” Jaxon glanced up, his eyes hard. “Danny’s a wildcard, but he hates Liam. That gives us some leverage. He might be unpredictable, but for now, we’re on the same side.” Samantha bit her lip, trying to keep her fear at bay. She trusted Jaxon with her life, but the uncertainty of their situation was suffocating. “What if Liam figures out what we’re up to before we can expose him? He’s already got a head start. We’re playing catch-up.” Jaxon stood, walking over to her. He placed his hands on her shoulders, grounding her with his touch. “We won’t let that happen. We’re smarter than him, and we have something he doesn’t—each other.” Samantha leaned into him, taking a deep breath to steady herself. His confidence, his unwavering belief in their ability to outsmart Liam, was the only thing keeping her from spiraling. But even Jaxon couldn’t predict how far Liam was willing to go to protect his empire. Just as she opened her mouth to respond, Jaxon’s phone buzzed loudly on the table. He stepped back to grab it, his eyes narrowing as he checked the screen. “It’s Danny.” Samantha’s heart skipped a beat. “What does he want?” Jaxon didn’t answer right away. He answered the call, putting it on speaker so she could hear. “Got some good news for you, lovebirds,” Danny’s voice drawled through the line, his tone as smug as ever. “I found a guy who used to work for Liam—one of his old associates. He’s willing to talk. You’re going to want to meet him.” Samantha exchanged a glance with Jaxon. This could be the break they needed, but trusting someone who had worked with Liam didn’t sit right with her. “What’s in it for him?” she asked, her voice tinged with suspicion. Danny chuckled. “He’s got his own reasons for turning on Liam. Let’s just say Liam’s not exactly great at keeping his allies happy. This guy’s ready to spill all the dirty secrets in exchange for protection.” Jaxon’s face hardened. “Where and when?” “I’ll send you the details. But be careful, Jaxon. Liam’s got eyes everywhere. If he gets wind of this meeting, things could get messy real fast.” Jaxon ended the call without another word, his jaw tight. He tossed the phone back on the table, pacing now as his mind raced with the next steps. “This could be it, Sam. If we can get this guy to talk, we’ll have the leverage we need to bring Liam down.” Samantha nodded, but the pit in her stomach only grew deeper. Something about this felt too easy. And in their world, easy usually meant danger. “Are you sure we can trust him? What if this is a setup?” Jaxon turned to her, his expression grim but determined. “We don’t have much choice. If we don’t take this chance, Liam will come for us, and we’ll be out of options.” Samantha didn’t argue. She knew Jaxon was right, but that didn’t make the risk any less terrifying. “Okay,” she said quietly, her voice steadying. “Let’s do it.” A few hours later, they were on the move. Danny had sent them coordinates for an old warehouse on the edge of town—far enough from the city center that it wouldn’t draw too much attention, but isolated enough that if things went south, no one would hear the commotion. Jaxon drove in silence, his focus entirely on the road ahead. Samantha sat beside him, her thoughts spinning as she stared out the window at the dark, empty streets. She hated this—feeling like they were walking into a trap—but the desperation for answers overpowered her fear. They arrived at the warehouse just as the last sliver of daylight disappeared over the horizon. The building loomed in front of them, abandoned and foreboding. Jaxon parked the car in the shadows, out of sight, before turning to Samantha. “Stay close to me,” he warned, his voice low and serious. “I don’t trust this guy, and I don’t want you getting caught in the crossfire if things go wrong.” Samantha nodded, her heart racing. “I won’t leave your side.” They stepped out of the car, the cold night air biting at their skin as they approached the warehouse. The large metal doors creaked loudly as Jaxon pushed them open, revealing the dimly lit interior. The smell of dust and decay filled the air, and every footstep echoed ominously in the vast, empty space. At the far end of the warehouse, a figure stood waiting for them. A man in his late thirties, with a wiry build and a face hardened by years of living on the edge. His eyes flickered with nervous energy as Jaxon and Samantha approached. “You must be Jaxon,” the man said, his voice rough. “Danny told me you’d be coming.” Jaxon nodded, his posture tense, ready for anything. “You’re the one who worked for Liam?” The man snorted, crossing his arms. “Worked for him, got screwed over by him, and now I’m ready to make sure he goes down. Name’s Kyle.” Samantha studied him closely, trying to gauge if he was telling the truth. Kyle had the look of a man with nothing left to lose, and in their world, that made him both dangerous and valuable. “What do you know?” Jaxon asked, cutting straight to the point. Kyle glanced around nervously, as if expecting Liam’s men to burst in at any moment. “Liam’s got a lot of dirt on a lot of people, but he’s been sloppy. He’s been laundering money through a fake charity, using it to funnel cash from drug deals and weapons shipments. I’ve got the paperwork to prove it.” Jaxon’s eyes narrowed. “And you’re willing to hand that over to us?” Kyle nodded. “In exchange for protection. Liam’s not the kind of guy who lets loose ends walk away, and I’m not interested in ending up in a shallow grave.” Samantha’s heart pounded as she exchanged a glance with Jaxon. This was huge. If they had evidence of Liam’s illegal activities, they could finally bring him down. But there was still one question that nagged at her. “Why now?” she asked, stepping forward. “Why are you turning on him now after all this time?” Kyle’s expression darkened. “Because I found out he was planning to kill me. I overheard a conversation between him and one of his men. He thinks I know too much, and he’s not wrong. I’d rather take my chances with you than wait for him to put a bullet in my head.” Jaxon studied Kyle for a long moment, weighing his options. Finally, he nodded. “We’ll get you the protection you need. But you hand over everything—documents, contacts, all of it. We want Liam, and we want him out of the game for good.” Kyle smirked, a glimmer of relief in his eyes. “Deal.”
