Amelia's POV
I lay on the couch, watching TV as Nita got ready for work. I had been acting like this ever since the interview.
“ Are you going to keep lying here depressed?” Nita stood by the couch in worry. I kept acting like someone who was partially dead.
“ Yes,” I replied bluntly.
“ I know you feel bad but it's not the end and besides, they are yet to get back to you,” she sounded hopeful.
“ Doesn't their silence mean that I didn't cut?” I readjusted on the couch.
“ Amelia, even if that's the case, that's not the end of your career. You can keep trying,” she encouraged.
“ That's easy for you to say,” I sarcastically remarked, rolling my eyes. “ I'm the one who's being a burden and living off you, not the reverse. I can't even afford a house for myself or the both of us if I wanted to,”
“ And did I ever complain that you were a burden to me?” Nita frowned. She didn't like what I said.
“ Even if you don't say so, I know so,” I fixed my gaze on the TV. “ Hey! What do you think you're doing?” I scowled. She stood in front of the TV.
“ Letting you know that you're not a burden,” she grabbed the TV remote from my hand and used it to hit me on the head.
“ Ouch!” I held on to my head. “ What was that for?” I frowned.
“ For thinking that you lost because of a bad interview,” she looked determined to change my mind. Yup, that was my best friend right there. “ It's their loss if they didn't give you the job. Besides, who needs their stupid job anyway?” She pouted her lips in defiance and I couldn't help but laugh, she looked cute when she tried to act defiant.
“ Come here,” she leaned forward and hugged me comfortingly. “ Don't you ever give up just because someone tells you that you're not good enough,” she encouraged. I wouldn't know what I'd do without her in my life.
“ Thank you, Nita,” I truly was grateful. Just then, my phone beeped and we let go of each other.
“ Who's that?” Nita looked me in the eye with curiosity spread across her face.
“ Oh my gosh,” I covered my mouth with my hand as I got to my feet.
“ What happened? Tell me what's going on,” she demanded. She couldn't take the suspense I was making her go through.
“ I got the job,” I looked at her still in shock as I announced in a low voice. “ I got the job!” I squealed and she screamed as we hopped about in a circle.
“ I'm so happy for you,” she was overjoyed. “ When are you going to start?” She questioned.
“ I haven't checked. Let me do that right now,” I scrolled to the bottom of the text. “ It's today... Wait, what?” I didn't realize what I had initially said.
“ I have to go now, I'll see you later in the evening,” I rushed into my room and hurriedly changed into corporate clothes before running out of the house.
___________________________________________
I walked into the company, moving briskly through the company lobby. As I approached the elevator, I met a tall Hispanic man with wavy brown hair smiling at me and for some reason, I felt he was waiting for me.
“ You're Ms. Amelia Sparrow, right?” He was as formal as I expected.
“ Y-yes, I am,” I stuttered. I was ruining my first day with my shyness. My cheeks turned a flushed pink in embarrassment.
“ Good to have you in YTC cooperation. I'm Jonathan,” he stretched out his hand and I shook it. “ I'm CEO Asher's assistant so we'll be seeing much of each other,” he gave a warm smile before showing me into the elevator.
Getting to the highest floor, it stopped and we got off. The hallway on this floor was so magnificent, everything about it spelled money. He showed me my desk which was directly opposite a set of large doors which I instinctively knew to be the President's.
We knocked. More like he knocked.
“ Come in,” a voice came from behind the doors and my heart began to race. ‘ I could do this’ I motivated myself. We walked in.
“ I've brought her here, sir,” he bowed his head slightly.
“ Hmmm, come out from behind him. I need to see how my secretary looks,” he rested his chin on his hand as he said.
“ I'm sorry,” I muttered. I had already begun giving a wrong impression on my first day, right? What was wrong with me?
“ I'm Amelia Sparrow, sir. I'm your new secretary,” I bowed a bit too much but it didn't matter if I could change his view of me now.
“ Hmmm, what's with the glasses?” He pointed.
“ Huh? I mean, it's for my eye defect,” what sort of question was he asking me? This felt awkward and now I was beginning to think we got the wrong office. On the one side, he looked oddly familiar like I had seen him somewhere before.
“ Urgh!!” He sighed in frustration. “ Can't you get contact lenses instead? I mean, spectacles are so unattractive,” he added.
“ Sir, that's...,”
“ I don't remember seeing it as a rule in the company, that we couldn't wear glasses,” I interrupted Johnathan who gave me signs not to speak, I presumed.
“ It's not,” he said plainly. “ But you would look a lot better without them,” he shrugged and I clenched my fist in annoyance. What a jerk.
“ Erm... I nearly forgot to formally introduce you to your boss. He's Asher Hernandez, the CEO of YTC cooperation,” Johnathan introduced and my eyes widened in shock. “ You must have heard of him before,” he added. Of course, I have. No wonder he looked oddly familiar, he's been on the news so many times for multiple scandals.
“ I doubt that,” I scratched my neck awkwardly as I denied it.
“ There's no possible way you wouldn't know me, I mean, everyone knows me for my handsome looks,” he ran his hand through his hair.
“ More like for scandals,” I muttered under my breath.
“ Did you say something?” He furrowed his brows.
“ Of course not. I was just questioning if I don't know you,” I kept up with my lies. “ Is there anything I can help you with?” I quickly changed the topic.
“ Yes, make me a cup of coffee,” he requested.
“ Yes, sir,” I smiled. I stood by the coffee table, superiors normally test secretaries on their ability to make coffee or tea and fortunately, I was good at it. Looking around, there weren't any sachets of coffee, I looked through the cupboard. Turns out that he liked his coffee fresh so I had to work with coffee beans.
“ I can do this,” I sighed.
Opening the office door, I walked into the office with a tray in my hands. I could only hope that it would be to his liking. I walked up to his desk to drop the tray.
“ Be careful,” he said grabbing the tray while still in my hands. His fingers brushed softly against mine and my cheeks instantly turned red. I dropped the tray nearly roughly on the table, making some of it splash on his sleeve.
“ Oh my gosh,” I gasped. What had I done? “ I'm so sorry, sir. I didn't mean to,” I apologized frantically, grabbing a bunch of wipes from the wipe box and trying to rub it off. I was going to lose my job at this rate. Tears gathered in my eyes, I couldn't lose my job, not now.
I felt a hand on my forehead, making me look at Asher whom I locked in his eyes. Taking the hand on which sleeve was stained, he took off my glasses and pushed some loose strands of hair behind my ear. I stared at him confused as if we were frozen in time.
“ I was right, you are a lot prettier without the glasses. I don't like nerds,” he remarked and I could feel my face burn up for some reason. I wasn't exactly sure if blushing was the right action, I should be annoyed at his last statement but shockingly, I wasn't and for a moment, my heart fluttered.
What sort of magic was he using on me?
