Episode 05: My Boss Is A Dragon

1002 Words
Eric walked down the staircase into the subterranean bar, which was filled with energy and jubilation as the nation commemorated its autonomy. This obscure treasure was a bustling center, teeming with both residents and tourists. As Eric descended the poorly illuminated stairs, he could hear the rhythmic beats of traditional music. The walls were embellished with patriotic adornments, while the bar was well-stocked with locally produced beverages, highlighting the distinct flavors and liquors of the country. The bartenders, adorned in customary garments, welcomed the patrons with a genial expression and a serving of the indigenous beverage, encouraging their participation in the festivities. The environment was charged with an electric energy, resonating with laughter and animated conversation as individuals from many backgrounds congregated in harmony. Eric made a mental note to come back after locating his employer. The bar served as a diverse hub where individuals from all cultures converged, exchanging narratives and encounters bound together by their profound affection for their own nations. Eric reached out to Mr. Park in order to connect with Savannah's acquaintances. However, upon his arrival, he discovered that the women were engaged in sensual dances with intoxicated individuals and were unable to hear Eric's shouts. Eric's speech was scarcely audible amidst the magnificent music. Eric surveyed his surroundings, but he was unable to locate Savannah or her mobile device. The game of cat and mouse was driving him nuts. When Eric emerged from the bustling subterranean infrastructure, the aroma of excellent food filled the air as street sellers put up kiosks offering a range of mouthwatering foods. The sizzling of meat on the grill, the pleasant smell of freshly baked items, and the spicy scent of international cuisine combine to produce an alluring aroma. Eric glanced at the driver. The man wore his sunglasses even at night. The driver's attitude upset Eric. He appeared very calm about his boss's departure. He was patiently waiting for Eric, leaning against the car, and eating a cheeseburger. "She's not here," Eric said, desperately throwing his hands in front of him. "Neither is her phone." His breathing became irregular as his heartbeat accelerated. "She probably smashed it on her way out," the driver said between bites. "It wouldn't be the first time." "If you know her so well, then why not bring me to her?" Eric inquired, flinging himself into the passenger seat. "I'm worried she'll get herself in trouble." "I'm sure she will," the driver responded, dropping the paper bag into the nearby recycling bin. He got in the car and started the engine. "I suggest we follow the narrow road leading to the path hidden in the woods." "Why?" Eric looked at the driver, wary of his specific remark. "If I were a big wild girl, I'd chase down my prey or lose my own predators in the shadows of the forest and under the cover of night." "That's oddly specific," Eric said, his eyes widening. The driver's statements left more questions than answers. "Would you rather go home?" I'm fine with either," the driver said, turning the wheel and driving the car down the busy main street of the little celebrating town. The settlement was a modest, picturesque community tucked between the city's outskirts and a well-known mountain with its deep forest. The townspeople were satisfied with their modest way of life, yet it was not uncommon for adventurous tourists to disappear without a trace while climbing the mountains at night. Eric pondered the possibility that Savannah would suffer the same fate. As Eric and the driver drove out of town, the streetlights faded, and the road began to twist and bend, taking them deeper into the woods. The trees appeared to grow thicker and taller, forming a canopy above the road. Eric was in awe of the beauty all around him, but he also felt uneasy. He looked at the relaxed driver, who guided the automobile ahead with a single finger. Before Eric could open his mouth to question the driver's motives, the route became more dangerous, with steep inclines and hairpin turns. Eric couldn't help but grip the handle on the door with one hand. "I would look up if I were you. Tell me if you see anything unusual." The driver instructed Eric, clicking a button to lower Eric's window. “Why would I look up?” Eric asked. “We’re not looking for the moon.” "How else are you supposed to find a drunk dragon hunting for food?" The driver questioned him, causing Eric to jump in his seat. "Savannah has a strong personality, but I would not call her a dragon." Eric gave a nervous chuckle. "What else do you call a gigantic flying reptile with supernatural abilities?" the driver inquired, accelerating the vehicle. "A dragon," Eric said, at a loss for words. "A dragon," the driver decided, stooping forward to watch activity miles in front of them. "There she is." Eric pushed his head out of the car window and squinted his eyes. "Injured bird?" Eric inquired, trying to make sense of the situation as he noticed an unsteady movement high in the dark sky. “What’s your plan?” The driver asked, keeping an eye on the dragon too high to steadily follow. “My plan?” Eric asked, getting his head back in the vehicle. “My plan was to take her out of the club and into the safety of the car. Not follow a spot in the sky that is too high to even discern properly.” "Either we follow her all night, or you had better have a good aim.” The driver explained, pointing back at the trunk with his thumb. Eric remembered the syringe. Its purpose became clear, as did the strange apparition in Savannah’s eyes. “My boss is a dragon.” Eric put a hand to his forehead, understanding the truth. “Your boss is a dragon.” The driver said. “Now, what are you going to do about it?”
