CHAPTER SEVEN –––––––– DIANE DID TRY TO SLEEP. She was exhausted, but her mind was restless and scattered all over the place. Adam’s appearance and everything that followed had taken their toll on her. She punched the pillow to make it more comfortable. It didn’t work, though. Diane willed her muscles to relax, using a relaxation technique she had learned in one of her yoga classes. Her eyes drifted to sleep, and with a soft sigh, she surrendered. Her muscles relaxed completely, yet her mind worked a double shift, filled with unsettling dreams. After about an hour and a half, Diane woke up with a startle. Some noise had reached her ears, disturbing her fretful slumber. She slowly sat up and listened intently. The din continued, and she thought that the wind was slamming the barn door.
