Endless Thoughts

944 Words
Liam's POV: I stood before the mirror, adjusting my tie. But my mind wandered. Her. The mysterious woman from the club. Her face was still a haze because of how dimly lit the room was, but I still remembered the feel of her skin, the smell of her perfume and the softness of her voice with her moans. I gritted my teeth, irritated. How could I, the Alpha of the Ironwood pack, be obsessed over a mere prostitute I was so lost in thought I didn't even hear the knock on the door Elijah let himself in, clearing his throat to announce his presence. "Lost in space, Liam?" I startled, jerking back to reality. My expression smoothed, masking my distraction. "Just focusing on the trip." I adjusted my tie, lost in thought. Elijah, my beta and lifelong friend, chuckled. "Lost in space, Liam?" he asked, dropping into the chair opposite my desk. I refocused, scowling. "Just preparing for the trip." Elijah's smile stayed wide on his face. He knew something was up Elijah and I grew up together and he has been my right hand man since we were kids. When I took over as alpha at 16, he helped me keep my head on straight, balancing my seriousness with his jokes. We're total opposites - he's the laid-back, easygoing one, while I'm the brooding, type-A alpha. But somehow, it works. We complement each other's strengths and weaknesses. Honestly I'd be lost in pack and business politics without his calm head and he'd get into trouble without my caution. We're an odd pair but we go well together. "I know you're thinking about a woman," Elijah teased, his eyes sparkling. I shrugged, trying to play it cool. "Don't be ridiculous." Elijah's grin never faltered. "Come on! Spill! Who's the lucky lady?" I sighed, irritation creeping in. "There's no one." Elijah's expression turned serious. "Liam, I know you. You're hooked." My mask slipped, and Elijah pounced. "Is it someone from the club? Maybe a certain mysterious lady from the other night?" My silence confirmed his suspicion. Elijah chuckled. "Liam, I know you. You're hooked." I glared, irritation rising. "Forget it, Elijah. It's nothing." Elijah's grin never wavered. "Sure thing, boss." But I knew he didn't believe me. He knew me too well. "Let's review the trip schedule," I said, changing the subject. Elijah nodded, pulling out his tablet. "Flight's at 8 am. Meeting with the investors at 10 am." As we reviewed the itinerary, Elijah's occasional glances hinted he wasn't dropping the subject entirely. I ignored it, focusing on the task at hand. My phone rang, breaking the silence. My mom's name popped up on the screen Sigh. I knew exactly what was coming next After Dad passed away, Mom was the one who guided me through the tough times. She taught me how to lead our pack and be a strong alpha. But lately, she's been on my case about finding a mate. "Get married, Liam. You need a luna," she'd say. I've tried to humor her, going on dates with women she picks out. But none of them feel right. The latest is Stephanie. Mom thinks she's perfect, but I'm not interested. I answered the phone. "Hey, Mom." "Liam, dear, Stephanie called me. She said you canceled your date tonight?" Mom's voice was disappointed. "Yeah, I had to change plans," I said. "What in the world is going on, Liam? You can't keep putting off finding someone. The pack needs stability—" "I know, Mom. But Stephanie's not the one." "Why not? She's lovely and comes from a good family." I hesitated. How could I explain I just didn't feel it? "It's just...not there, Mom. Trust me." "That's not an excuse, Liam. You need to call Stephanie and reschedule," she insisted, her voice firm. I sighed inwardly. I despised Stephanie's superficial charm and calculated flirting. But I respected my mom. "Okay, Mom. I'll call her," I relented. "See that you do. And Liam?" "Yes?" "Don't disappoint me. This is important for the pack's future." "I know, Mom. I won't." I hung up the phone, trying to bury the conversation far far away. Elijah let out an overly dramatic gagging sound. "Yuck, Stephanie. Ugh, I hate that b***h. She gives me the cringe." I ignored him, focusing on adjusting my cufflinks. "Can't believe your mom's so obsessed with her," Elijah continued, shaking his head. "She's got nothing on you, Liam. You deserve so much better." I tightened my jaw, avoiding eye contact. Elijah knew my mom's meddling was a sensitive topic. "Let's focus on the trip," I said, my tone neutral. Elijah snorted. "Fine, but if I have to sit through another dinner with Stephanie's fake laughter, I'll lose it." I shot him a warning glance, and he raised his hands in mock surrender. "Sorry, sorry. Business mode activated." I stood up, adjusting my suit. "Time to go." Elijah fell in step beside me as we headed out of the office. "Come on, Elijah, let's move," I said after glancing at my watch. "We don't want to miss that flight." As we walked to the car, Elijah brought up the mystery woman again. "I saw the look in your eyes when you thought about her, bro," he said, grinning. "If she makes you happy, find her." I rolled my eyes. "Drop it, Elijah." He chuckled. "Just saying. You deserve someone who makes you smile." I ignored him, focusing on the road ahead. We arrived at the airport, and Elijah's phone buzzed with messages. "I'll grab our tickets, try not to lose yourself to your fantasies again" I shook my head, smiling despite myself.
