The medieval period was a dark time; plague's spread sickness and strange creatures roamed the land: Dragons and Vampires, Werewolves and Witches. The age was not kind to humanity at all, it's partially a miracle that they survived at all. One of the few things that helped them to succeed was the fact that a desperate human is willing to do almost anything.
No one knows how they were discovered, or how it became known that this creature could easily change its very body into that of another's. But humanity did discover them, and even gave them a name. They were known as Changelings, a creature of many features, both human and animal, with the ears of a horse, a unicorn's tail, the hands and hair of a human, the eyes of a Demon.
These creatures were thought to be only myths, nothing at all proved they existed... until suddenly they had one in their grasp.
The creature looked like an ordinary little human girl, her eyes were red from crying and snot clung to the back of her hand where she had tried to wipe it off her face. A truly masterful performance by a creature so vile-to take the form of an innocent child, to beg and plead and cry until their voice left them... it tried so hard to convince them that it wasn't a monster... some people were even starting to doubt that what they had locked in the cage was a real changeling, and not just a scared child.
Many eyes watched as the cage was raised up off the ground. Inside, the tiny being was curled up in one corner-shaking as the cold winter wind wiped through the threadbare clothes that hung off it's skinny frame, the creature had been questioned for days about it's intent in the village, where it's home was, how many of their disgusting kind were nearby. they had gotten no true answers, the beast who wore the Childs face stayed true to their human form and answered as if they had always been human...
Changelings were truly tricky creatures.
The crowds thinned out as the weather got colder and the captured changeling did nothing but shiver and cry, by the time the last person had left it was dark outside. The little girl was left to die in her cage, the frozen wind and icy metal taking away every scrap of warmth she might of felt. She was so hungry, so weak, so cold...
a light snow started to fall, the first one of the year... tomorrow the town would wake up to a beautiful blanket of snow, and a single child frozen inside a cage hanging high in the town square... or would they?
A yell of anger woke the town from it's peaceful slumber. Instead of a frozen corpse, they found the fallen cage. Some of its metal bars had been melted away, leaving a gaping hole large enough for the tiny little girl to squeeze out and escape-the snow covered any trace of where the beast could of gone. People started yelling, they had to find the creature! They had to kill it!
deep in the woods, far from the town, a little girl woke up in the darkness of an underground cavern. she felt scared, until something touched her. warmth spread through the touch, a feeling of curiosity and gentleness accompanied it... it felt like... she was finally safe.
