Both of them knew. The Protectors have been studying the mark ever since it formed, ever since the time Cristina, Aelizia, Franco, and Liza were still alive, people would be hesitant at first to ever approach the borders of the East let alone approach the Ashen Fields, that wasn’t known as the Ashen Fields at the time. Somebody had to take up the initiative and if they didn’t want the world of Oniphere to go into another crisis where they would have to fight a demonic creature of gigantic proportions like Vega, they would have to get close to the mark and study it, so that they can be prepared in the future even if it meant that they would lose their lives. At first, it was just people who thought that it would be worth it sacrificing themselves for the good of others so that they would make the future better, it slowly evolved and it got complicated with all the precautions they had to take, they would need to know anything, they would need to be skillful at everything, they would be the Protectors. And lately, they’ve been getting a bad reputation by scaring simple folk with just their existence, if they didn’t exist then people wouldn’t think there’s a problem with the world. The Mark as they called it was actually a portal to the other world, the underground is what the Kin called it. It was more of a portal to another dimension, but the Kin wasn’t there just yet to comprehend what dimensions and portals are, so the Mark being a gate to the underworld would have to suffice for the time being. Having godly powers it wasn’t a surprise that the Sigil opened a portal to another dimension, the fact of the matter was asking what couldn’t it do? The Kin would speculate that Hugo and Francis were locked in an eternal battle against Vega, the two parts of the Sigil giving each other immortality and Vega being the horrifiying spawn that it is, was immortal right from the get go, and this way Hugo and Francis would hold it in check in a battle that would last until the end of the universe. And the Kin for being primitive they weren’t far off from the real truth, or the real story in fact. Hugo and Francis were indeed interlocked in eternal battle against Vega, but what the portal had done was open a door to the fourth dimension, or rather it opened a door through time and space, and whosoever is able to travel in the fourth dimension could travel anywhere, back in the past, the future, whichever planet you want, whichever place, you could stand aside and watch solar systems form only to travel in the future when the sun goes supernova and destroys the same solar system. Hugo and Francis, and not to mention Vega had absolutely no idea how to control it. They would land on frozen planets and fight in the darkness and the cold, they would teleport to molten worlds, and fight atop volcanoes, or even they would land in the most idyllic planet with green hills, blue skies, they would land and they would devastate the place. Once the Mark formed on Oniphere it seemed to have been closed, but now that is glowing there’s a tear, an opening in the tunnel of time and space, an opening from which at any point something could come out. It could be Hugo and Francis victorious, it could be Vega, it could be both, but the Protectors weren’t going to take any chances, Oniphere wouldn’t take any chances.
“We should burn the dead!” Lucius walked away from the mark.
“What?” asked Cristopher still standing behind him as he was walking away.
“You heard me! If anything comes back, it will raise the dead against us,” he walked away.
