I rode many miles with “Sam,” known as Ulysses S. Grant. Uly. Tagged along somehow went lot of places saw lot of killing death. He had very best wagons. Booming cannons. Even fire in woods. Soldiers dying everywhere. Overland Campaign, also known as Grant’s Overland Campaign Wilderness Campaign, we were in thick wilderness. Many trees. I always stayed in camp with him. Uly pacing back forth, smoking cigars, staring out, writing messages, telling people what to do, drinking his whiskey. Satchels with papers. Horsemen. He did not eat much. Mumbled to himself. We crossed Rapidan early May of 1864 seeking to push back Bobby Lee to Richmond force open battle. Bobby’s gray army surprised Uly attacking his blue army that first week.
