The Best Friend's Secret

882 Words
Azalea practically floated home from the community center that afternoon, her mind buzzing with the revelation of Lily. She couldn't believe it. Veronica Nicolo, the formidable CEO, the woman who seemed to glide through life untouched by anything messy, was a mother. And to a sweet, energetic little girl like Lily, no less. It added a completely new dimension to Veronica, one that both softened her image and made her even more intriguing to Azalea. As soon as she walked through the door, she found Aya, her mom, watering her beloved orchids in the living room. Azalea didn't even bother taking off her shoes. "Mom! You are not going to believe what happened today!" Azalea exclaimed, practically vibrating with excitement and a hint of disbelief. Aya turned, a gentle smile on her face. "Oh? Did one of your little artists paint a masterpiece?" "Better!" Azalea paused, taking a deep breath. "I met Veronica's daughter!" Aya blinked, a little water dripping from her watering can onto the floor. "You met Lily? Oh, that's wonderful, honey! She's such a bright little thing, isn't she?" Azalea stared at her mom, completely bewildered. "You knew?! Mom, how did I not know Veronica has a five-year-old daughter named Lily?!" Aya chuckled, shaking her head. "Oh, Azalea. Of course I knew. Lily's adorable. Veronica's had her for, what, almost six years now?" She looked thoughtful. "Wait, no, Lily just turned five, didn't she? Time flies. She's so cute." Azalea threw her hands up in exasperation. "But... why didn't you ever tell me? We talk about Veronica all the time!" Aya shrugged, a casual gesture that completely baffled Azalea. "Well, it's just... never really came up, I guess? You've been away at college for the last two years, remember? And before that, you were so busy with school and your friends. Veronica's a very private person, you know that. And Lily's usually with her nanny or at her exclusive preschool. She just started kindergarten this year." "But she's your best friend's child!" Azalea insisted, feeling a strange mix of annoyance at her mom and a deeper understanding of Veronica's guarded nature. "I know, honey," Aya said, putting down the watering can. "It's not a secret, not really. It's just... not something we talk about constantly. Veronica is a very dedicated mother, but her personal life is very separate from her professional one. And she usually likes to keep Lily out of the limelight. You know how the media can be with high-profile CEOs." Azalea slumped onto the sofa, processing this. It made sense, in a way. Veronica was fiercely protective of her privacy. Still, it felt like a huge piece of the puzzle had been missing. And it made Veronica's previous dismissiveness of Azalea even clearer. Azalea wasn't just a college student trying to get attention; she was now potentially a part of Lily's life, and Veronica was likely even more cautious because of that. "So, is that why she looked so... annoyed when she saw me with Lily?" Azalea mused aloud, mostly to herself. Aya gave her a sympathetic look. "She probably just wasn't expecting it. And she was likely stressed because she was late picking Lily up. You know Veronica. She likes everything to be perfectly on schedule." Aya paused, a knowing glint in her eye. "Are you going to tell me why you're so interested in Lily all of a sudden, or is this just your new found community spirit?" Azalea felt her cheeks flush. Her mom knew her too well. "I just... I like kids, Mom! And Lily is really sweet. She said I'm the 'bestest'!" Aya smiled, a soft, understanding smile. "She sounds lovely. Well, it's good you two connected. Maybe you can offer to help Veronica out sometimes. Being a single mom and running a company that big... it's a lot, even for Veronica." That was exactly what Azalea had been thinking! Aya had just handed her the perfect excuse. "You think so? Like, she'd be okay with me helping out?" Azalea tried to sound nonchalant, but her voice was brimming with eagerness. "She probably wouldn't ask for help directly, but if you offered genuinely, especially if she's in a bind, I think she'd appreciate it," Aya advised. "Just don't be too... much, Azalea. You know how Veronica can be." "I know, I know. 'Too much'," Azalea muttered, recalling all the times Veronica had given her that look. But this time, it was different. This time, there was a child involved, a vulnerability Azalea hadn't seen before. Azalea spent the rest of the evening concocting a new plan. It wasn't about grand gestures anymore, or trying to be overly impressive. It was about being helpful. Being reliable. Being the person Veronica could, perhaps, eventually rely on. And maybe, just maybe, through Lily, Azalea could chip away at the formidable wall Veronica had built around herself. She would show Veronica she wasn't just a bothersome shadow, but a genuine, caring presence. This secret revelation about Lily had changed everything. It wasn't just a crush anymore; it was a deeper connection Azalea felt to Veronica's life, and a renewed determination to become a part of it. The unseen spark was still there, but now, Azalea had a new way to try and fan its flame.
