Chapter 3: His Scent on the Wind

332 Words
The next morning, the sun barely kissed the sky when I was already dressed and out of the dorm. Sleep had been useless. My dreams were haunted by glowing eyes and running feet. I pressed my hoodie tighter around me, trying to shrink into myself as I stepped into the courtyard. Elite College was too quiet for a school that big — like something was always watching. Or maybe… someone. “New girl,” a voice drawled. I turned — and saw him. Kayden. He leaned against a tree like he was part of it. Wild. Calm. Dangerous. His eyes scanned me like he was reading my blood. “I know what you are,” he said softly, only for me to hear. I froze. “What are you talking about?” He stepped closer. Too close. Then leaned in until his breath brushed my ear. "You smell like the forest after rain... and secrets.” I shivered. Was it fear? Or something else. In Class... Of course, fate would have it that he sat right beside me. I kept my eyes on my textbook, pretending not to notice the heat coming off his skin. "Stop pretending,” he murmured, “You’re not like them.” I snapped my eyes to him. “And you are?” He didn’t smile. He just said, “We’re the same. Moon-blooded.” Then he reached out and — for a split second — touched the faint crescent mark on my wrist. I jerked back like I’d been shocked. But his touch... it didn’t burn. It called. Suddenly the door slammed open. A tall girl with silver hair walked in like she owned the world. Her eyes locked onto me, and a slow cruel smile spread across her lips. "Well, well,” she said, “The lost pup finally showed up.” Kayden stiffened beside me. He didn’t look at her. He looked at me. "Don’t trust anyone,” he whispered, “Not even me.”
