Chapter 10 – The Interruption

243 Words
The world seemed to hold its breath. Kayden’s hand brushed against Amara’s, and for a moment, nothing else existed — not the rules, not the dangers, just the quiet thrum of their hearts in sync. Then a branch snapped. Both of them turned sharply, instincts flaring. The air shifted, thick with a scent Amara didn’t recognize — sharp, metallic, almost like… blood. “Stay behind me,” Kayden muttered, stepping forward. His playful smirk was gone, replaced by the hardened expression of a trained warrior. Amara’s mind raced. This wasn’t supposed to happen tonight. They were far from the village boundaries; no patrols came this deep into the forest unless— A figure stepped into the moonlight. Cloaked in black, their face hidden, their presence radiating danger. The voice that came from beneath the hood was cold and deliberate. “You shouldn’t be here, little wolf.” Kayden shifted slightly, keeping his body between Amara and the intruder. “She’s with me,” he said, his voice like steel. The hooded figure tilted their head. “Exactly why I came.” Before Amara could react, the stranger’s hand lifted, and a wave of energy rippled through the clearing. The ground trembled beneath her feet, and for the first time, she felt truly afraid — not for herself, but for Kayden. The moon seemed to dim as danger closed in, and Amara realized: their secret nights had just drawn the wrong kind of attention.
