Chapter One EIGHTEEN MONTHS LATER The sound of someone knocking on his door was so unexpected and foreign that Wyatt dropped the teakettle he’d been filling into the sink with a loud clatter. He quickly turned off the water, cursing under his breath, and moved to the front door. On the way, he grabbed a handgun from the open g*n safe. Since it was just him at the cabin, he didn’t bother to lock it anymore. There was a mountain lion that liked to hang around, and he’d had to fire a warning shot more than once to discourage it from getting closer.
