I listened to Victor speak, jaw clamped so tight it ached, fighting with every fiber of my being to hold back any sound. My silent reaction seemed to set him off. His voice dropped, cold and menacing, all warmth snuffed out in an instant. "Veronica, you're still the same as ever. Never take a word I say seriously.
