Chapter 40

1408 Words

Elowen's POV I had been in the bathroom for a while, standing at the sink looking at myself. The words came through the door again, clearer now that the water was off. The subordinate's voice, low but distinct: "She said to deal with her the same way she dealt with Catherine." I went completely still. Kael's voice came back flat. "Understood." The call went quiet. I stood with my hands braced on the porcelain and looked at my own face in the mirror. My mother's end, handed down as standing orders. I let that sit in my chest for a moment, in the place where a pack bond should have been and wasn't. Then I noticed it. The glass wall was fully transparent from outside. I hadn't thought about that when I went in, hadn't thought about much beyond the words still ringing through the door.
