The heavy oak door of my quarters clicked shut, cutting off the low hum of activity from the pack house corridors. Outside, twilight painted the sky in shades of deep indigo, casting soft shadows across the room.
I set my tactical pack on the desk, the heavy weight of the me velvet box settling like an anchor. Before I could turn, a pair of warm, solid hands settled onto my hips, pulling me backward until my spine was flushed against a broad, hard chest.
"You've been holding your breath since we left the cabin," Blaze murmured, his deep voice vibrating straight through my back.
He spun me around in his arms before I could reply, backing me up until the edge of the desk pressed against my thighs. His scent—warm pine, rain, and raw male heat—flooded my senses, overwhelming every logical thought in my head. In the dim light, his bronze-gold eyes were dark, heavy with an intensity that made my breath catch.
"I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop," I breathed, my hands sliding up his muscular chest to rest against his warm neck. "Malakor... he's a shadow from my mother's past. What if the silver ring isn't enough, Blaze? What if I'm putting you in danger?"
"Let me worry about the danger, Angel Eyes," he whispered, his hands sliding possessively up my waist, his fingers digging gently into my skin through my shirt. "Right now, the only thing I'm worried about is you."
He dipped his head, his lips trailing a searing path from the turn of my jaw down to the sensitive dip of my collarbone. A sharp, electric spark shot straight through my core. I gasped, my fingers tangling in his silvery-blonde hair, pulling him closer as Ember let out a low, purring growl of approval deep in my chest.
Blaze shifted, stepping flush between my knees. He lifted me effortlessly onto the edge of the desk, his grip firm and unyielding on my thighs as he brought his mouth back to mine.
The kiss was hot, hungry, and unhurried—a fierce declaration that claimed every inch of my focus. He tasted like heat and wild promises, his tongue tasting mine until my head spun. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs, all thoughts of dark magic and blood debts completely incinerated by the warmth of his skin against mine.
When he finally pulled back, both of us were breathless. His forehead rested against mine, his thumbs tracing slow, deliberate circles over my exposed skin where my shirt had ridden up.
"I know your true mate might still be out there," Blaze rasped, his eyes dark with raw emotion as his thumb brushed over my bruised, swollen lips. "I know Grim felt that faint, distant tug... but right now, you're here. In my arms. And I am not letting anyone take you from me."
"Blaze..." My voice was a breathless whisper, my pulse thumping wildly under his hands.
"We tell Trax at midnight," he murmured, leaning down to press one last slow, lingering kiss to my lips, leaving my whole body humming with static heat. "Until then... just let me hold you."
I nodded, unable to form words as my chest rose and fell in heavy, shallow breaths.
Blaze leaned back just enough to slide his arms under my knees and lower back, lifting me off the desk in one fluid motion and carrying me over to the bed. We tumbled onto the mattress together in a mess of tangled limbs, my fingers staying firmly anchored in his hair while he pulled the dark quilt up over us.
He didn't push further. Instead, he wrapped his massive, heavy arm around my waist, pulling me flush against his chest so my back rested securely against his heart. His chin rested in the crook of my neck, his hot breath fanning across my skin in steady, rhythmic waves.
"Get some sleep, Sorano," he whispered, his thumb idly rubbing small circles into my hip over my clothes. "I'll wake you before midnight."
For the first time in days, the suffocating anxiety lingering in my mind began to quiet down. Wrapped in Blaze’s heat, backed by the steady thud of his heart, I finally let my eyes slip shut, drifting into a deep, dreamless sleep.
A sharp, persistent knock at my bedroom door shattered the stillness of the dark room.
I sat up instantly, my Beta reflexes kicking in before my eyes fully opened. Beside me, Blaze was already on his feet, his posture low, bronze eyes flashing with pure predator instinct in the shadows.
"Sorano? Blaze? Are you guys in there?" Trax’s hushed, urgent voice cut through the heavy wooden door.
I glanced at the antique clock on my nightstand. 11:50 PM.
"We're here, Trax," I said, smoothing down my shirt and swinging my legs over the side of the bed. "Give us two seconds."
Blaze adjusted his shirt, running a hand through his messy silvery-blonde hair, though he didn't look remotely bothered that Trax had caught him in my quarters. I unlocked the door and pulled it open, stepping back to let Trax slip inside.
Trax’s grey eyes darted from me to Blaze, taking in the tangled sheets on the bed and the lingering heat in the room. He raised an eyebrow, but before he could crack a joke, his expression hardened into absolute seriousness.
"I don't care what you two were doing," Trax said, dropping his voice to a low whisper as he closed the door behind him. "We have a problem. I was running a late sweep near the western ward lines ten minutes ago, and Lily's instincts were right. The ward stones at Vector Three didn't just flicker... they were completely neutralized."
My heart did a violent drop. "Neutralized? Like the magic was cut?"
"Extinguished," Trax corrected, looking dead into my eyes. "And that's not all. I picked up a fresh scent trail cutting straight toward the river gorge. It's not a full pack, but it's cold. The same dead, copper-and-ash smell from last night."
Blaze stepped up beside me, his hand settling firmly on the small of my back. "Malakor isn't waiting for the third night."
"He moved early," I said, a cold wave of adrenaline washing over me as I turned to my desk and unzipped my tactical pack. I pulled out the velvet-wrapped box and the ancient journal, setting them under the warm glow of the desk lamp. "Trax... there's something you need to see before we go out there."
Trax stepped closer, frowning as his eyes landed on the Pierced Moon crest stamped into the wood. "What is this, Sorano?"
"It's the reason Malakor is here," I said, meeting his sharp grey gaze without flinching. "And it's time I told you the truth about my mother."
