“Obviously.” They clinked imaginary glasses with their free hands. “What’s that?” He poked at Toria’s leg. She looked down. A sliver of paper peeked out the top of her hip pocket, shimmering with faint light. It was the scrap of paper she’d shoved away after finding it on the floor of the train. She drew it out and unfolded it. What had been a blank paper ripped down one edge now showed glowing elven runes decorating one side. Light traced the runes in rainbow hues. “Can you read it?” Toria asked. She could identify some alchemical symbols from her chemistry classes, but Kane had taken at least one class on elven literature. “Hardly,” Kane said.
