Chapter 5: Looking at a Stranger

514 Words
As Daniel explored the city, the moon fell low in the sky, creating an unpleasant glow over the empty streets. His footfall echoed on the concrete, a constant reminder of the uncertainty that waited ahead. He could not get rid of the impression that he was being watched, that eyes were stabbing him in the back like knives. He cast a sidelong glance, but the streets were deserted, their shadows appearing to move and dance with each flash of the lighting. Daniel felt a chill run down his spine and picked up his speed, his heart palpitating as he turned the corner into a tiny alleyway. But before he could move forward again, a figure stepped out of the shadows and fiercely blocked his way, sending shivers down his spine. He sensed the stranger's stare cutting through his layers of barriers with an accuracy that was disturbing. His secretive, dark eyes seemed to be whispering secrets of intrigue and danger. "Who are you?" Daniel commanded, without showing a single hint of the terror rumbling inside him. However, the unfamiliar person merely laughed at showcasing a chilly, clever lip-curl that made Daniel shake. The stranger said, "I could ask you the same thing," in a seductive voice. "But I think we both know the answer to that, don't we?" Daniel's heartbeat became faster as he tried not to lose his cool, a thousand questions racing through his head with no end in sight. What did this stranger want with him, and who was he? What's more, how on earth did he know Daniel's name? Before Daniel could say anything, though, the stranger moved forward and, with a predatory ease, drew closer, disturbing Daniel. The man asked, his voice just audible above a whisper, "You're searching for something, aren't you?" "Something that's been tempting you for quite a long time." As Daniel looked directly at the stranger, an idea of recognition sparked in the back of his mind, causing his breath to catch in his throat. Was this man just another barrier on his path, or did he possess the key to the answers he sought? Daniel felt a sudden surge of electricity in his veins as the stranger's fingers touched his arm, interrupting his thoughts before he could ask more questions. The stranger said, "Be careful what you wish for, Daniel," his voice a frightening echo in the darkness. "Some truths are better left buried." The stranger then disappeared into the shadows after giving that strange warning, leaving Daniel by himself in the pitch-black, his heart racing as he tried to make sense of what had happened. Daniel was confident of one thing, though, as he stood there, struggling with the uncertainty that weighed heavily on him: he was about to make a discovery that would upend everything he had previously believed to be true about himself and the world. He squared his shoulders and walked down the empty street, determined to face the mystery that had swallowed him whole. The words of the stranger echoed in his ears as he descended into its depths.
