I'm a background character in a sweet romance novel, and the male lead, Liam — my employer — is the one I'm tied to.
Liam got into a car accident a year ago and lost his sight temporarily.
I applied for the job on a whim, never expecting to actually get it.
"Hello, young master. I'm Nora."
I tugged at my clothes, nervously eyeing the silent man in front of me.
Liam's beautiful eyes were vacant. After a long moment, he finally cracked a small smile. "Mm. I'm Liam."
'Even though our first meeting was a little cold, as time went on, I realized he was actually easy to get along with.'
This past year, we'd grown close. Sometimes I'd let myself daydream — little girlish fantasies. But deep down, I always knew he was destined for the female lead.
'Why else would he have blurted out "moon" last night while we were tangled up together?'
'The female lead's name is Maya.'
My burning desire went cold in an instant. Liam must have realized he'd misspoken too, because he tilted his head slightly and buried himself in the act.
'But I couldn't forget it.'
So early the next morning, ignoring the soreness in my body, I got dressed quickly and left.
But just before I walked out, I couldn't help stealing one last look at Liam.
He lay on the bed with his eyes closed, his hair slightly tousled, his jawline sharp and beautiful — breathtakingly handsome.
As the male lead, he really did have a stunning face.
'Too bad he was never mine to keep.'
As if sensing something, he turned over and mumbled in his sleep. "Nora…?"
'I panicked, thinking he'd woken up. I held my breath, not daring to make a sound.'
But luckily, Liam drifted back into a deep sleep.
I tiptoed out as fast as I could.
'Goodbye, Liam.'
'A wave of sadness welled up in my heart, but I forced it down.'
I went downstairs, found Liam's mother, and formally handed in my resignation.
Mrs. Li looked at me with some regret. "Are you really quitting? I've grown quite fond of you. Won't you stay a little longer?"
I shook my head firmly. "No, thank you, ma'am. I've already found another job."
"What a shame. Liam's eyes are almost better, you know."
'That's exactly why I have to go.' "Ma'am, could I ask you one more favor?"
I met Mrs. Li's eyes.
"If — just if — he comes looking for me, could you please not give him any of my contact information?"
