"Suthep.." I call the medic sitting at my head. The ambulance, all screaming sirens, rolls at full speed, moving the passengers and giving me even more headache. They put me on a stretcher and put me in the ambulance before taking me to the hospital.
"Yes Doc?" He turns to me worried. "We will be in the hospital shortly."
"We have an injured 30-year-old man," the voice of a rescuer interrupts me as I get ready to speak. His mouth on the vehicle's radio, he informed the emergency department of our arrival. "A neighbor told us that the patient hit his head on the ground when he fell and lost consciousness. He was conscious when we arrived. O2sat 100% E4V5M6DTX 101. Open wound on the left side of the forehead..."
The neighbor ? Did I hit my head while falling?
I frown.
"Suthep..." I call him again. "Who called the ambulance?"
He shakes his head as he says, "I don't know. I have to ask the referent. I understand it was your neighbor who was with you at the time. Don't you remember?"
Of course I remember. How can I not remember it. This person is not my neighbor, he is the murderer. "When you got there, did you see the person who called me?"
"No, you were alone. It's strange by the way." Suthep, who is a few years older than me, looks at me suspiciously "Did something happen?"
I'm pretty happy that someone realizes something was wrong. "I didn't pass out. I was attacked."
Suthep's eyes widen. "Are you serious?"
As I do not live very far from the hospital, the trip does not take long, we arrived in a few minutes. We are cut off from our conversation when the ambulance doors open. Suthep and the rescue team waste no time getting out of my way to get me to the emergency room. What happens next is complete chaos. I am quickly taken to one of the consultation rooms. An intern on duty runs towards us followed by two nurses. I close my eyes, not being able to bear all this crush anymore.
"Professor Bunn!" I try to open my eyes to look at the intern calling me. One of the nurses rolls up my sleeve to take a blood test. "Professor, can you hear me?"
"Mmh..." I answer quietly.
He begins to examine me from head to toe. When he's sure that I don't have any fatal injuries that should be treated as a priority, he turns to me to ask, "What happened?"
I put my hand on my head, debating if I should tell the truth about this incident.
But since my life is in danger, I decide it would be better if someone knew it wasn't just an accident. Come to think of it my assailant could be the one who killed Janejira, I should keep this to myself in order to give this information to the police. "Someone attacked me at my house and hit my head on the ground..."
He looks at me shocked. "The nurse says you fell and hit your head. Isn't that what happened? Professor, do you remember his face?"
I shake my head and close my eyes to stop a terrible duet: headache and gagging. The intern directs a light pen on my iris once again to be sure.
"How are you feeling? Headache? Nausea? Blurred vision?"
"Big headache ... and nausea too. I threw up in the ambulance several times."
He nods. "We need a scanner then. I'll reserve it for you. If the staff knows it's you, they'll give you priority. Hold on." After that, he quickly leaves to report to the nurses. My eyes follow him. I'm much more afraid of the one who attacked me than of my head injury at this time. The diagnosis indicated a risk of intracerebral hemorrhage which required a CT scan. I'll probably have to stay in the hospital for observation for a while.
I would have to wait here for the processing time. Once I'm rested, I'll cut my cell phone line and find a way to reach Captain Aem. It will be easier to talk to him directly, he should be the only one who understands the situation.
'And don't think you can trust the cops.'
I remember that sentence, fueling my apprehension...
...
I was taken to a quiet and cold room, the only sound in the room was from an old air conditioner installed high up. The wound on my forehead had been stitched up. The back of my right hand was connected to an IV with a needle. After the CT scan results came out I was taken to a room reserved for the surgical department of the hospital. Luckily, there is no sign of a brain hemorrhage. I just need to rest here for a while if there is no complication. I am relieved to stay here. I am safe in the hospital. No one could reach me there.
I plan to call the medics and borrow a phone from them to carry out my plan. I also have to look on the internet to see how my cell line is cut. I grab the call button on the headboard.
My finger is about to press on it when there is a knock on the door. I jump from the sudden noise. The door opens to reveal a handsome man I knew.
"Pert?" I call him surprised. I look at the clock, it's almost midnight. "What are you doing here?"
"Hey, why can't I be here when my best mate goes to hospital?" Pert pulls a chair to the bed and sits down. "I told the nurse in front that I was from your family."
"Seriously, how did you know I was here?" I ask him, looking at him without moving.
"I tried to call you. I wanted to invite you for a drink at a friend's new restaurant. It was a last minute invitation, around 11:00 pm, so I didn't get you. I didn't speak sooner. I tried to call you five or six times but you didn't answer. It worried me so I went to your place. I found one of your neighbors in front of your house who told me that the ambulance had already brought you. I got scared and so here I am. " Pert brushes a strand of hair off my forehead and looks at my wound. I freeze for a moment. "What happened? Tell me."
This is my chance. If I tell Pert all about what happened, he'll be able to help me. If the suspect really has someone undercover in the police, he won't be able to know that I asked for help from someone outside. Pert is the person I trust the most right now.
"Do you know about the woman who hanged herself in the downtown building, I take it?"
"Yes, I was informed. I read the news on the net. You're the one doing the autopsy, right?
Pert pulls out his phone and looks for something on it. "The Captain said it's suicide after an argument with her boyfriend. Big depression. A farewell letter. What else?"
"What does the news say?" I take his phone from my hands. The headline of an online article read 'Depressed schoolteacher found hanged in her apartment after breaking up. 'In the article, you could see pictures of Janejira's body covered with a white sheet that was carried in the ambulance.
I go through the content until the last sentence. '... the emergency services took the body to the hospital to determine the cause of death.'
The news does not mention that she may have been murdered. Captain Aem called me this evening to inquire about the autopsy report in which I noted my results. He told me that he wouldn't tell the press about my suspicion as to the real cause of Janejira's death. The killer will then think he has succeeded and it will be easier to apprehend him.
"Actually..." I take a deep breath and recount everything that has happened in Pert. His gaze changes from serious to shocking as I speak. When I reach the part where I get my head hit in cold blood at home, the Prosecutor swears under his breath, pissed off.
"Holy s**t! You're f****d up Bunn." Pert Quickly pulls something out of his pocket and gives it to me. It was a white smartphone, an older one than the one I had taken from him to read the article. Confused, I take it. "Take it. If something happens call me or the police. I have Captain Ithipol's number too. It's recorded."
That's what I wanted. "Do you always walk around with two phones?"
"Yeah, one as just a spare to call the girls. I don't really need it. " answers Pert to lighten the mood.
"Do you think I should call the Captain? Will he know if I do? He might have a mole." I realize that I am completely panicked at this point.
Pert thought for a few seconds and said, "Okay, listen, you don't have to do anything right now. Keep calm. Write your autopsy report as he asked you to. I'll find a way to tell the police about it. I have a lot of connections whether it's with law enforcement or outside. I should be able to find some clues. In the meantime, I'll send one of my guys to protect you. " I have never seen Pert behave like this except when he is working. He comes up to me and takes me by the shoulders. "Relax. I won't let anyone hurt you."
"...I am sorry to disturb you." I feel lighter now that I've told someone about it. There is nothing more magical than having a sense of security.
Pert nods before getting up. "Hey, it's a life-death matter. I can't sit and do nothing. If something happens you call me Bunn right away, okay? Now I'm going to find someone to protect you."
"Thanks Pert". I am truly grateful to him. As soon as it's all over, I will offer him a meal, a huge meal, without hesitation.
Shortly after Pert leaves the room, a young nurse comes in to check my temperature and blood pressure. I ask her to turn off the light before she leaves. Now, only a thin streak of light coming from the hallway under the door allows me to see the interior of the room. I finally managed to block my phone line. After that, I lay down and hold Pert's phone in my hand, trying to sleep. My headache has improved significantly, but I don't feel any better. I am sure the night will pass slowly. After a while I wake up with a shake in the middle of the darkness, the light passing under the door allows me to see the clock on the wall: 2:45 a.m. A slight headache remains but it's getting better. I sit up slowly feeling a little muddy, I'm almost unable to keep my balance.
A piece of paper falls from my chest onto my legs...
My heart started to beat faster...
What is that?
I take the paper with a trembling hand. I unfold it slowly. The beautiful handwriting, it is the same.
"I told you not to tell anyone about it. Don't you like me being nice? I have to teach you a lesson. Say goodbye to Mr. Prosecutor."
Oh no... My heart skips a beat, seized with terror. I look around until I find the silhouette of a man sitting on the sofa.
I must escape as quickly as possible and seek help. I start to get up, but I feel something is wrong. All my strength has evaporated, my vision is blurring. I feel sleepy. I can't get out of bed despite my best efforts.
The shadow approaches me quickly. I try to turn to press the call button to summon someone but the shadow easily catches me by the shoulder and pulls me back. I try to scream but a big hand covers my mouth.
"If you don't want to die, hold back," he urges me in a resolute voice. I am completely paralyzed with terror. This is the same person who entered my home. I can remember his voice and the way he hides his face.
How can I want to sleep in this situation?
My eyes turn to my IV before I even know it.
Don't tell me that...
"Just to let you know, I didn't mean to hurt you. It's all your fault." I watch his hand reach the IV and then try to push the other out of my mouth. Once he's finished adjusting the flow he takes something out of his pocket. It is a syringe containing a clear liquid. He grabs my arm and twists it to reach the catheter on my forearm. Despite my numerous attempts to free myself, he succeeded in injecting the product into my veins.
My eyelids are getting heavy. A sedative? Diazepam? Midazolam? I begin to lose consciousness from the effects of the drug invading my body in spite of myself.
"You have a secret that no one else knows Doc," The man's voice seems to come from afar. "But I know him, and I'll use it against you."
