Mrs. Avery looked at her son with sorrow in her eyes, drowning in thoughts. Tears slipped out of her eyes as she began to remember what happened. “I'm sorry, Richard… your father… your father is dead,” she said, sobbing again.
Richard's eyes widened in shock, and he froze still. “W…what?” He questioned again, with a trembling voice.
She lowered her head. “Yes, son. Your father died,” she said.
Richard's eyes brimmed with tears, not believing what he had heard. “W…what? How? It can't be possible!” He gasped once more.
Mrs. Avery consoled him. She, too, couldn't control her tears. Breaking the news to her son relived the ugly incident that happened years ago in her head, and she tried to swallow her pain.
“I'm sorry, son. Your father died out of an illness, son,” she said. She immediately wiped her tears. “But, son. His last wish was for me to find you, and for you to take over his business–the company he built with sweat and blood,” she said.
Richard's mouth was shaped like an o. “W-what do you mean, M…mother?” He stuttered in confusion.
“Yes, son. Your father wanted you to take over his business and you will be the ruler of the company,” she said to him.
Richard looked at her in dismay. “Father had a company?”
“Not a company, but companies. Big businesses. In short, an Empire,” she stated.
Richard couldn't believe his ear. The last time he saw his father, he was a normal man working a corporate job.
“What? Dad built an Empire?”
“Yes, son,” she said. “And it's all for you to now take control of as you take over.”
He scratched his head, perplexed by the fact he had just heard. “But…what is the name of this Empire?”
“Luxor Empire,” she said, and immediately, Richard froze in shock.
The name rang loud bells in his head, as he tried to resound what he just heard.
“Lu…Luxor?”
Mrs. Avery nodded. “Yes, son, Luxor Empire. It's a conglomerate of businesses owned by our family.”
No one in Greenfield, or even the entire country, hadn't heard of the Empire–the biggest Empire in the country and one of the greatest in the world. Strong shock held Richard as he began short-circuiting, not knowing what to say.
“You are trying to t…tell me, Dad owns the E…Empire?”
Mrs. Avery, with a receptive smile, nodded at him. “Yes, son.”
Richard couldn't contain his emotions. It was a mix of shock and happiness. How come his father created an empire from scratch?
“Mom… does this mean we're rich?” He asked, trying to confirm his thoughts that stopped him from shouting.
“Yes, son, we are,” she said.
“Oh, my goodness!” Richard exclaimed, crying tears of joy. “Finally! Yes. It's over. The suffering is over!” He shouted, looking to the heavens. The bliss washed his heart, as he remembered his days of poverty.
Mrs. Avery smiled at her son. She felt so content, and it felt like she could die in peace seeing him happy.
“Son, you don't look well dressed. Come on, you have to go to Luxe Couture and get whatever you want,” his mother said.
Richard was confused. He had heard of that name before.
“Luxe Couture?”
“Yes, son. It's the fashion brand owned by the Luxor Empire,” Mrs. Avery enlightened him.
It tangled Richard's brain the more. He also had heard of the Empire.
“But what do I have to do there?” he asked his mother
“Son, go there and pick whatever. Luxor Empire is owned by the Avery family, and Luxe Couture is a fashion company we also own,” she said.
“So, that famous fashion brand…”
“Yes, son, it's ours. But don't worry, very soon, I'm stepping down. I will arrange the date when you will take over.”
Confusion masked Richard’s face.
“But Mom, I can't do that. I don't even know how to run a business. I have been a petty worker for many years.”
“Don't worry, son. It takes time to learn things. You will learn.”
She paused and went over to a drawer. From there, she withdrew a card in his hand and handed it over to Richard.
“Mom, what's this?”
“It's a specially customized card offered by our banking brand partner. The account is $200 million. Spend it on whatever you want.”
“What?! $200 million?” He mouthed out, shocked.
“Yes, son. It's all yours,” he said.
Richard couldn't believe what he was holding in his hands. It was a very beautiful card, with the design of the Luxor Empire–an aesthetic ‘LE’ logo on the top corner of the front and back.
“Go, son. Don't think about it too much. Get whatever you want.”
“T…thank you so much, Mom,” he said, still trying to control his fast breathing from being overwhelmed. Just then, he remembered to ask a question.
“How's grandma, aunt, and my brother?”
Mrs. Avery's expression of happiness was immediately subdued. She paused for a second as if a thought was flooding her head, before looking at Richard and smiling at him.
“They're doing well, son. They've missed you a lot.”
“I've missed them too,” Richard said, trying to ignore the weird expression of his mother after he asked the question.
“Son, we have to prepare you to take over the company. I have to introduce you to the business and also to the family today. They've been wanting to see you,” she mouthed.
Richard stood up from the couch and shook his head
“No, Mom, not yet,” he said.
Mrs. Avery looked at her son, surprised. “But, son… why? I have waited for you for so many years. This should have happened many years ago.”
“Not now, Mom. I have some unsettled things to do,” he said. “Don't worry, in three days, I will properly come to the mansion and be welcomed as the son of the house but for now I have to take care of something. I will definitely make my enemies pay!”
