Rain plagued their travel over the next two days, but the companions passed over the border into Texas late in the evening of the second day after leaving their initial camp and found shelter beneath a thicket of wild plums. They found themselves on a slight hill but were happy for the cover in the relentless showers. “I’m soaked to the bone,” George groaned as she searched the ground for dry wood to start a fire. Pete returned, dragging a dead limb behind her. “I found a fallen tree down the way where I staked out the animals.
