Rodolfo was a man of swift strides, his long legs effortlessly covering the ground as he walked in his usual brisk manner. Kirsty, on the other hand, struggled to keep pace with him. Her legs felt heavy, weighed down by fatigue and the limited range of motion offered by her worn-out jeans. She had been wearing the same outfit since morning when she had been engrossed in cleaning the sprawling ranch. Now, as she glanced down at herself, she couldn't help but notice the dirt stains that marred her clothing.
Realizing the disheveled state of her attire, Kirsty quickly assessed the situation. She tilted her head and sniffed the air around her, hoping against hope that she didn't carry an offensive odor. To her relief, no foul scent wafted from her body, allowing her to breathe a sigh of relief. Though her appearance was far from ideal, at least she didn't smell bad. Still, she longed for a change, a fresh set of clothes that would reflect her true character.
As Kirsty struggled to match Rodolfo's pace, her mind wandered back to the house she had just left behind. It stood there, a lonely figure against the vast expanse of the ranch, its presence now illuminated in her thoughts. A sudden realization hit her: the house was fully fenced. It seemed strange, an enclosure protecting the modest abode from the world outside. The image of the white picket fence, weathered by time and yet standing strong, etched itself into Kirsty's mind.
The sun ascended gracefully in the clear sky, casting its radiant light upon the world below. In the distance, a group of dark clouds loomed, their presence indicating an approaching shower of rain. The air was crisp and cool, carrying with it the delicate fragrance of freshly picked flowers. Along the path they walked, tall trees stood proudly, seemingly forming an aisle that led them toward the entrance gate of the beta's household. The absence of neighboring houses only enhanced the serenity of the place, enveloping it in a tranquil aura. Everything appeared harmonious and immaculate, reflecting an atmosphere of peace.
As they drew closer, the grandeur of the beta's residence became apparent. The towering structure commanded attention, standing as a testament to the family's stature and influence. However, Kirsty couldn't help but wonder if the married couple's families also resided within its walls, though skepticism crept into her thoughts.
"We are going to use the back door connecting to the kitchen," Rodolfo announced, breaking the silence that hung in the air. His voice carried a sense of assurance as if he had navigated these grounds many times before.
Astonished by the sight of a large water fountain positioned at the center of the aisle, she couldn't help but be captivated. It stood as a magnificent centerpiece, its waters glistening under the sunlight. Its presence exuded an air of elegance, contributing to the grandeur of the surroundings.
Doubts and uncertainties began to cloud Kirsty's mind. "Do they know anything about me?" she asked, her voice laced with apprehension.
Rodolfo responded, his voice calm and reassuring, "No, I will just accompany you inside." His words offered a glimmer of solace, providing a sense of security amidst the unknown.
Rodolfo continued walking, but now his pace had slowed considerably. Kirsty followed closely behind, feeling a sense of fatigue washing over her. Her breaths came in heavy, labored gasps, and the thirst that consumed her intensified with each step. She longed for a glass of water to quench her parched throat. As she trudged along, a rush of strong wind suddenly engulfed her, but strangely, the leaves on the trees remained motionless, and even the twigs did not sway. It was an eerie sensation, and she couldn't shake off the feeling that she was the only one experiencing it.
Attempting to gauge Rodolfo's reaction, Kirsty glanced sideways without drawing too much attention. However, her discreet observation revealed nothing. Rodolfo remained utterly focused, seemingly unaffected by the cold gust of wind. Her suspicions grew, and she scanned her surroundings for any other signs that could explain the strange occurrence. Yet, there was nothing out of the ordinary.
Lost in her thoughts, Kirsty was startled when Rodolfo abruptly stopped in his tracks. She managed to regain her balance just in time, avoiding a collision with his bulky frame. Her heart raced from the sudden halt, and she fought to steady herself on unsteady ground.
"So, Kirsty, right?" Rodolfo's deep voice broke the silence, catching her off guard.
She nodded her voice barely a whisper. "Y-yeah..."
Rodolfo pointed towards a slightly ajar door on the side. "The door to the kitchen is that one."
Kirsty's attention shifted to the indicated door. It stood slightly open, a sliver of light peeking through the crack.
When they arrived earlier at the entrance of the beta's house, Kirsty took in the sight before her. The house stood tall, with two stories looming above her. In the center of the courtyard, a water fountain provided a serene focal point, its gentle splashes adding a sense of tranquility to the surroundings. On the left side of the house, a path crafted from sturdy bricks led the way, the same path that Rodolfo had chosen to follow. It was clear that they wouldn't be using the main entrance door, as Rodolfo guided Kirsty towards a side entrance. She deduced that this path would take them directly to the kitchen.
As they made their way toward the side entrance, Kirsty couldn't help but feel a mix of anticipation and curiosity. The secrets within this house seemed to beckon to her, whispering promises of revelations and hidden knowledge.
"Ohh," Kirsty muttered softly, taking in the peculiar surroundings.
Rodolfo turned towards her, his face wearing a serious expression. "By the way, I will just introduce you to the people inside, and right after that, I am going to take my leave."
Kirsty nodded, her mind racing with questions and uncertainties. She could sense a certain tension emanating from Rodolfo's body, despite his attempts to conceal it. The connection she felt earlier seemed to fade into the background, replaced by an air of guardedness surrounding the man.
Swallowing her unease, Kirsty gathered her courage and spoke up. "Okay, um, can I ask you something?"
Rodolfo's response was nonchalant, his expression unchanged. "Sure."
His face remained impassive, his usual stoic expression not betraying any emotions that lay beneath the surface. Though he sensed Kirsty's apprehension and desire for understanding, he chose not to elaborate further. The age difference between them was evident, and he believed that certain details were better left unspoken for the time being.
Kirsty's voice wavered as she voiced her concerns. "Do I have to see Chloe even now? I... I hope I don't have to."
“That…hmmm, just do your thing in the kitchen.”
“That means I don’t need to?” Her eyes started to light up because of it.
"Not totally."
"Not totally?" Kirsty sought clarification, hope coloring her tone.
Rodolfo nodded, a slight hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "After we settle things here, I will speak with Chloe and explain that you have an important task to attend to in the kitchen."
Kirsty's eyes lit up at the prospect, a glimmer of relief shining through her worry. It wasn't that she harbored ill feelings towards Chloe; it was the guilt and shame that gnawed at her from within.
“Not totally, after here, I am going to see Chloe and tell her that you have a job in the kitchen that needed to do.” The weight on Kirsty's shoulders lifted slightly at his words. Knowing that Rodolfo would take the responsibility of informing Chloe about her situation brought her a sense of solace. It was a small respite, but it gave her the space she needed to navigate her own emotions
Kirsty followed Rodolfo through the side entrance and into the kitchen. The clinking of utensils, the fragrant aroma of food, and the bustling activity of the culinary space filled her senses. It provided a welcome distraction from the tangled web of emotions that threatened to consume her.
"And what about the beta of the pack?" she inquired, her voice laced with a mixture of anticipation and uncertainty.
Rodolfo glanced at her briefly, his gaze unreadable. "Still, I will just tell him that you chose to work here."
Though her desire to discuss her plan for negotiation with Sam burned within her, Kirsty understood that now was not the opportune moment. There were more pressing matters at hand, and she needed to establish herself within the household before embarking on such discussions. She nodded, accepting Rodolfo's decision, and silently resolved to prove her worth through hard work and dedication.
The universe seemed to conspire in her favor, aligning the circumstances with her desires. Kirsty felt a surge of optimism as everything seemed to fall into place, allowing her to shape her destiny within the confines of the pack. However, a cautious reminder echoed within her, urging her to remain wary of the Alpha's presence and to tread carefully in his presence.
"Okay," Kirsty responded, her voice steady but laced with a sense of caution.
Rodolfo fell into a momentary silence, capturing Kirsty's attention. His posture stiffened, and he turned away from her once more. The weight of his words hung in the air, anticipation mingling with a tinge of anxiety.
"By the way, the Alpha is already in the place," Rodolfo informed her, his words dropping like a stone in a still pond.
Kirsty's heart leaped within her chest, its rapid rhythm almost threatening to escape its confines. The news of the Alpha's presence sent a surge of adrenaline through her veins, her mind racing with questions and uncertainties. As she pondered the possible reasons, Kirsty realized that the Alpha's arrival added a layer of complexity to her situation. He was a figure of authority, and his influence extended over the pack and the household. Crossing his path could have consequences she couldn't yet fathom.
“Oh.”
That’s all she could say.
“And uhm, just follow whatever the people inside are ordering you, the cook is not from the beta’s pack, he’s from the castle, old and uhm, mean,” Rodolfo added.
“Thanks for the reminder.”
Kirsty stood before the slightly opened door, her anticipation mingled with a touch of nervousness. Rodolfo's words echoed in her mind as she prepared to step into the bustling world beyond. With a deep breath, she mustered the courage to continue her journey.
"I will be back here after dinner," Rodolfo stated, his voice carrying a hint of reassurance.
Kirsty nodded, her gratitude evident in her eyes. She understood that his presence would be temporary, but she found solace in the knowledge that he would return.
Rodolfo swung the door open, revealing a bustling scene inside. The kitchen was alive with activity, as a group of individuals moved swiftly, their attention focused on various culinary tasks. The scents of spices and simmering dishes wafted through the air, creating an inviting atmosphere despite the tension that lingered within.
Kirsty's gaze fell upon an elderly man, short in stature, yet exuding an air of authority. His expression was stern, almost capable of sending one fleeing from the premises. A sense of unease washed over her as she recognized the kitchen's head, Leo, described by Rodolfo as an outsider from the castle—a figure known for his strictness and sharp tongue.
Rodolfo introduced Kirsty to Leo, his words laced with a hint of formality. "Leo, here's the woman I told you about. She will be helping out in the kitchen."
Leo's eyes scrutinized Kirsty from head to toe, his piercing gaze making her feel exposed. The weight of his judgment hung heavily in the air. She knew she would have to prove herself in this unfamiliar territory.
"I see," Leo replied curtly, his tone revealing little warmth. "Just leave her here."
"Alright."
Rodolfo nodded in acknowledgment, casting one final glance at Kirsty before stepping back outside. The door closed behind him, leaving her to face the challenge ahead alone.
Kirsty took a moment to compose herself, to gather her resolve. She understood that she had been granted an opportunity, however uncertain, to prove her worth and earn her place within this kitchen.
