Privilege

As Kirsty opened her eyes, she found herself momentarily disoriented, trying to piece together the fragments of her consciousness. The bright sunlight streaming through the window blinds assaulted her senses, causing her to squint and shield her eyes from its intensity. Confusion mingled with the remnants of sleep as she tried to recall the events of the previous day. As the haze cleared, Kirsty's gaze fell upon the paper bags of clothes that lay beside her on the bed. The sight of them instantly brought back the memories of Rodolfo's act of kindness and the emotions she had experienced. The reality of it all settled upon her, dispelling any doubts or thoughts of it being a dream. She gingerly touched the bags, reaffirming their tangible presence and the significance they held in her journey. They were a symbol of hope and change, reminding her that she wasn't alone in her struggles and that there were individuals who cared enough to offer assistance. Trying to shake off the remnants of sleep, Kirsty attempted to retrace the events of the previous day in her mind. She longed to relive the emotions she had felt, the spark of hope that had ignited within her. However, as she tried to summon those feelings, a pounding headache surged through her temples, reminding her of the toll the emotional rollercoaster had taken on her. Feeling the discomfort intensify, Kirsty sat up on the bed, her hand instinctively reaching for her head. The headache throbbed relentlessly, dampening her enthusiasm and temporarily clouding her thoughts. She realized that before she could embark on any further exploration of her emotions, she needed to tend to her physical well-being. With a heavy sigh, Kirsty swung her legs over the side of the bed and stood up, swaying slightly as dizziness washed over her. She made her way to the mirror, taking note of her disheveled appearance and the fact that she was still wearing the same worn-out clothes from the day before. It was another day to her, another day to just let herself get into continuously working. It’s going to be what her days look like in the coming weeks and months or even years if she won't plan on escaping the pack. It’s going to be a never-ending cycle of working and not knowing what her purpose is. All she wanted is a life where she can safely live and just do things freely, but considering her situation, these weren't even attainable. There was a need inside her, that was calling for her attention to know who she was before she lost her memories, but if someone was really concerned about her whereabouts, they would find her, but no one did, and she waited for it for eight years, hoping that maybe, some other people were thinking of her existence. She lost hope for it when she was captivated by the hunters and surrendered to them. With hunger gnawing at her stomach, Kirsty's instincts led her to the well-stocked refrigerator in the kitchen. As she opened its doors, she was greeted by a sight that both surprised and intrigued her. The contents inside showcased a level of modernity and convenience that she hadn't expected to find within the pack's secluded realm. Gazing at the array of preserved meats, fresh vegetables, and various food items neatly arranged, Kirsty couldn't help but marvel at the abundance before her. It was a stark contrast to the meager rations she had grown accustomed to. The pack, it seemed, had managed to maintain a connection to the outside world, embracing certain advancements that kept them self-sufficient and supplied with essential provisions. “This might work.” She said as she took a slice of meat. A surge of delight washed over Kirsty as her eyes fell upon a basket of vibrant fruits nestled amidst the provisions. The sight of the familiar colors and shapes awakened a flood of memories from her time in the forest before she had been taken captive by the pack. Each fruit seemed to hold a nostalgic essence, a connection to the freedom and simplicity she had once known. Eagerly, Kirsty reached for an apple, feeling its smooth skin beneath her fingertips. The familiar weight of the fruit filled her hand, and she brought it closer to her nose, inhaling its sweet aroma. It was a small gesture, but one that held immense significance for her—a taste of the world she had left behind, a reminder of the life she had once lived. With a sense of childlike anticipation, Kirsty sank her teeth into the succulent flesh of the apple, savoring its crispness and natural sweetness. Juice trickled down her chin, a delightful contrast to the dryness that had plagued her in recent times. Each bite offered a momentary respite, a temporary escape from the burdens that weighed upon her. "Oh! They have fruits too!" A spark of joy illuminated Kirsty's eyes as she beheld the familiar fruits that had once been a staple in her diet during her time in the forest. It was a delightful surprise, a connection to the world she thought she had left behind forever. The sight of those fruits evoked a rush of memories—memories of foraging in the wilderness, plucking ripe berries and juicy fruits from the abundant flora that had sustained her. Her inner wolf, ever vigilant and instinctual, recognized the significance of this find. The pack's provisions were not limited to mere sustenance; they were an assurance of survival, a lifeline in the face of uncertainty. The bounty of fruits before her seemed to promise a continuation of sustenance for years to come, a renewable source of nourishment that would not easily run dry. "The supply will last for years." Her inner wolf suggested. With her appetite partially appeased, Kirsty's thoughts turned to her impending visit to the main household. The task that awaited her there remained unclear, but she knew it was her duty to fulfill whatever orders were given to her. It was a part of the unspoken agreement she had entered into when she joined the pack. As Kirsty busied herself in the kitchen, preparing breakfast, her pounding headache began to intensify, casting a cloud of discomfort over her morning. She couldn't shake off the fatigue that weighed her down, despite having just woken up. The persistent throbbing in her head made it increasingly challenging for her to focus and think clearly. As she seasoned the meat for grilling, flashes of scenes flickered in her mind, fleeting glimpses of memories that seemed both familiar and distant. The pain of her headache seemed to trigger these fragments of recollection, offering glimpses into a past that remained shrouded in mystery. Yet, the intensity of the headache made it difficult for her to grasp onto these memories and piece them together coherently. Kirsty took a moment to pause, placing her hand against her forehead in an attempt to alleviate the discomfort. The flashes of scenes continued to dance at the edge of her consciousness, leaving her with a sense of both curiosity and frustration. She yearned to understand the significance of these glimpses and the memories they hinted at, but the relentless pounding in her head prevented her from delving deeper into them. Despite the persistent pain, Kirsty soldiered on, determined to carry out her tasks and nourish herself. She placed the bread into the toaster, awaiting its transformation into a warm and crispy delight. While she waited, she tended to the grilling meat, ensuring it was cooked to perfection. The familiar routine of preparing a meal offered a momentary respite from the turmoil inside her head. With the toast ready, Kirsty carefully plated her meal, balancing the grilled meat and toasted bread on a plate. The aroma of the food filled the kitchen, momentarily distracting her from the nagging headache. She knew that nourishing her body was essential, even in the face of discomfort and uncertainty. As she sat down to eat, Kirsty's mind wandered back to the flashes of scenes and memories that had briefly surfaced. The questions lingered, teasing her curiosity and urging her to explore her past further. Kirsty started to flip the meat on the grill and decided to make herself a cup of coffee. She laughed at the idea of how she felt so free while she was inside the house, it was like she was not living under the status of a servant, with no orders from the higher authorities. And she was thankful because this wouldn't be possible without Chloe. “Chloe…” Kirsty whispered upon remembering the woman. She could recall that Rodolfo told her that the woman wanted her to join the dinner last night but she declined the offer. And she was put into the kitchen to help prepare the food for dinner. Since it was already daytime and no one called for her, she wanted to visit the woman to personally thank her and to ask what she would constantly do in the pack. She wanted to forget the images of the man she waited for the other night and wanted to bury herself in the depths of her duties. "We must make haste so that we can see in her in the household." Her inner wolf suggested. With a sense of gratitude and contentment, Kirsty finished her meal, relishing each bite as she contemplated the blessings bestowed upon her. She recognized the privilege of having a comfortable dwelling, nourishing food, and the clothing that had been provided to her. It was a stark contrast to the hardships she had endured in the past, and she couldn't help but feel a deep appreciation for the newfound provisions in her life. As she savored the last bite of her toast, Kirsty made her way to the porch, drawn to the captivating sight of the forest that stretched out before her. The towering trees, their branches reaching toward the sky, formed a natural canopy that provided solace and tranquility. The melodic chorus of chirping insects filled the air, further enhancing the serene ambiance. It was as if the forest whispered to her, reminding her of her innate connection to nature and grounding her in the present moment. Lost in the beauty of the scene, Kirsty took a moment to immerse herself in the sounds and sights of nature. She let the peace and tranquility wash over her, momentarily setting aside the persistent headache that continued to plague her. The familiarity she felt with the surroundings stirred something within her, a sense of belonging and harmony that she couldn't fully explain. With a sense of purpose, Kirsty moved swiftly through the house, her steps guided by determination. She entered her bedroom, where the paper bags containing the new clothes still lay, a symbol of the unexpected kindness that had been bestowed upon her. Carefully selecting an outfit from the assortment, she discarded her worn garments and slipped into the fresh attire. The fabric felt crisp against her skin, a stark contrast to the tattered clothing she had grown accustomed to. As she surveyed herself in the mirror, Kirsty couldn't help but feel a renewed sense of self-worth. The new clothes seemed to hold the promise of a brighter future, a reminder that even amidst uncertainty, small acts of kindness could make a profound difference. As Kirsty ventured forth into the embrace of the outside world, a sense of purpose coursed through her veins. The forest, a place that had once been her sanctuary, stood tall and majestic, its ancient trees reaching toward the sky. The familiar scent of earth and foliage filled the air, rejuvenating her senses and reigniting memories of her past. Yet, she knew that today was not a day for wandering among the trees and relishing in the freedom of the wilderness. Instead, she had a different path to follow, a destination that held the promise of gratitude and connection. With each step, the excitement in her heart grew, fueled by the anticipation of meeting the beta's wife and Rodolfo, the man who had shown her unexpected kindness.
