Rumors

2073 Words
It has been a week since she had encountered her mate, and since then, Kirsty didn't hear any news from him. She continued to live in the house provided by the beta’s family and she had no idea where the couple was as she tried to visit the house, some of the servants told her that the two were not available as they have some errands to do, together with the Alpha of the pack. In an attempt to distract herself from the thoughts swirling in her mind, Kirsty decided to immerse herself in other activities. She spent more time exploring the surrounding woods, relishing the peace and tranquility they offered. She found solace in nature, its calming presence helping to ease her troubled thoughts. The moment the servant mentioned the Alpha, she felt so nervous for no reason. There was this time when she went again to the other house and asked for the presence of the beta and his wife, she was told that they were inside but they didn't allow any visitors for the moment. Kirsty didn't know why it was like it, and she wondered if it has something to do with her encounter with Draken. Even Rodolfo, she didn't see the man for quite some time, she only last saw him on that same day he accompanied her to the kitchen of the household of Sam. It was like the people who helped her vanished. For the whole week, Kirsty walked from the household of Sam to the ranch, without any aid of something that she can ride to the place where she used to clean. She continued cleaning the said ranch as early as the morning and woke up before the sun rises. It was her daily routine, as her presence was not called to do something. She made sure to wear the ring that was given to her by Sam, as it was one of the things that protect her, from anyone who tried to think that she didn't belong to the pack because most didn't recognize her. Every time she passed by the forest, she felt a different kind of atmosphere and it was pulling her to go to the said bush that Chloe once told her about. It was like something was pulling her to discover something, but Kirsty didn't let it take over her thinking, to her, sometimes curiosity is not a good thing as it only leads you to danger. Kirsty was on her daily routine of going to the ranch once again, and this time, she saw a few people on the ranch who were busy polishing the places of the horses, and some were cutting off grasses. Most of them were older people and based on how they presented themselves, they were servants of the pack, but if she would compare it to her status, they were above her. Kirsty went on to grab some broomsticks near the garage and was about to start cleaning the place when someone called for her attention. “Miss!” When she looked in the direction of where the voice came from, a smiling old lady was ushering for her to come near the woman. Kirsty, intrigued by the old lady's question, approached her with a curious expression on her face. The sun beamed down on the ranch, casting a warm glow on the surroundings. As she neared the old woman, she noticed the lines etched on her face, marking years of wisdom and experience. “I only saw you today, are you new to the pack?” The old woman started. Even Kirsty, just saw the woman today. “Uhm, yeah…why?” Kirsty felt a twinge of unease as the old woman's question hit her ears. She had carefully crafted a fabricated story, a blend of truth and fiction, to protect her true identity as a rogue infiltrator posing as a pack member. This disguise was crucial for her survival, as the pack she had joined held secrets and power that she needed to uncover. “Why are you here?” The old woman walked near her. And Kirsty had no idea what she was trying to imply. “What do you mean?” “Most servants of your age were working in the castle, and I could see that you are the only young servant in the ranch.” She didn't know anything about it. She even preferred to work in the ranch than be in the castle where the Alpha is residing, someone that she was afraid to cross paths with. “Oh…okay.” That’s what she was only able to answer the old woman. “Name?” “Kirsty…Kirsty Lincoln.” "Kirsty Lincoln," the woman repeated, her voice tinged with a mixture of curiosity and concern. "I believe I have heard that name before, but I can't quite recall where." A few seconds passed by as the old woman rubbed her head and tried to remember something that it was quite obvious she had already forgotten. “I…am only the one here in the pack.” She wanted to get back her attention. The old woman did not move a bit and continued to do it once more, and this time, she was closing her eyes as if it would help her remember something. “I…I can't remember where and when did I hear that name…” “It’s okay, it’s…not that important.” Kirsty smiled at the old woman, but deep inside her, she wanted to know about it, as she was also on a quest of finding her real identity and who she was even before she lost her memories. As Kirsty observed the old woman's struggle to recall the name, she couldn't help but feel a connection. The pursuit of identity and lost memories resonated with her own journey, fueling her curiosity even further. She leaned in closer, her eyes filled with a mix of compassion and determination. "Please, if there's any chance that this name holds a clue to our past, we would be eternally grateful if she could share it with us." Her inner wolf called for her attention. “Would you continue doing your job in the ranch?” The old woman directed her gaze toward her. It was out of nowhere asked her. “Yeah…the beta of the pack instructed me to clean the ranch,” Kirsty said, as she tried to roam her gaze around the place. “The beta? Sam?” The woman was surprised to hear about it. “Yes.” “But the Alpha knows you are working here?” “Huh? What does it have to do with the Alpha?” “I guess the Alpha knew, of course, it needs the approval of the Alpha before someone is deployed in the ranch.” The old woman whispered. "Does that mean I should have sought the Alpha's permission before starting my work here?" Kirsty asked, a hint of concern creeping into her voice. The old woman smiled gently. "I wouldn't worry too much, my dear. Sam, being the beta, likely knows what he's doing. He must have informed the Alpha about your task. It's more of a formality to keep the Alpha in the loop, ensuring they have knowledge of who's present in their territory." “What do you mean?...” Her curiosity was eating her now. The old woman, who seemed to possess a wealth of knowledge about the pack dynamics, leaned closer and spoke in a hushed tone. "The Alpha is the ultimate authority in the pack, Kirsty. They make important decisions and oversee all activities. It's possible that the Alpha needs to be aware of everyone who enters the territory, even for seemingly mundane tasks like cleaning." “Come here.” The old woman ushered Kirsty to follow her to the nearest place where no one could hear what they were talking about. The old woman looked around and when she finally could confirm that there were only the two of them, she broke the news that even Kirsty was surprised to hear about. “The Alpha was looking for a specific person inside the pack…and based on the rumors I heard, it was a woman and the Alpha last saw her in the ranch…” “Yes, I see it," Kirsty replied, her voice filled with a mix of apprehension and intrigue. The old woman's cryptic words and the mention of the Alpha's search for a mysterious woman had ignited her imagination, leaving her eager to unravel the secrets that lay hidden within the ranch and its surroundings. And?” She started to get nervous about it. It was like listening to the rumors was a crime to her. “That was a week ago, and…even before the Alpha looked for that person, this place-the ranch…and you see that tree in the hill?” The old woman paused for a moment, her eyes fixed on the distant tree atop the hill. Its branches reached out like gnarled fingers against the sky, casting a long shadow over the surrounding landscape. Kirsty followed her gaze, a growing sense of unease settling in her stomach. The same hill that made Kirsty remember something about her past. “Yes…?” “It’s protected by the Alpha…and I also heard that it has something to do with the attack eight years ago.” “And what does it have to do with the woman the Alpha saw in the pack?” Kirsty couldn't find any connection to it. “Good question young woman…I don't even know. Probably the intruder went to that protected place. Who knows…” “Can I ask you a question?” She had been so curious about the Alpha of the Trowbridge pack. “Sure.” “Is the Alpha of the pack that cruel?” Kirsty's voice was tinged with curiosity and concern. The old woman gasped. The old woman, her eyes widening in response to his question, held a finger to her lips. "Shhh...someone might hear us," she whispered. She glanced around, ensuring their conversation remained private, before continuing. "To be fair, that's what the rumors said...but I personally could say that the Alpha provided the pack and its members what we need." "But if the rumors speak of the Alpha's cruelty, why do you think differently?" The old woman sighed, her eyes distant with memories. "Hmmm, he was only following the rules of the pack," she explained. "The rules that have been established for generations. Some may perceive them as cruel, but they are necessary for the survival and well-being of the pack." "What rules?" The old woman hesitated for a moment, contemplating whether to share such information with her. Eventually, she decided to offer Kirsty a glimpse into the complex dynamics of their pack. "Too young for you to know," she said with a sigh. "But one thing is for sure—the Alpha is a slave to the pack's own established rules, and he can't do anything about it. He must simply follow what has been stated." “So…that Alpha is a good person?” “I…I can't even agree with that either. But he leads the pack so well. Regarding the rules…he’s unmated now…so if he planned on changing a thing, he must be mated to the Luna first.” Kirsty's eyes widened as she processed the revelation. "The Alpha is unmated?" she exclaimed, unable to hide her surprise. The concept of an Alpha wolf without a mate seemed unusual to her, and she couldn't help but express her curiosity. “Lower your voice child. Yes, he has not yet found his Luna.” “And that means that the Alpha is not an old person?” What she said brought laughter to the old woman. Realizing that Kirsty may have been making assumptions about the Alpha's age based on his unmated status, the old woman chuckled and dismissed her misconception. "Silly child," she said with a laugh, "the Alpha being unmated doesn't necessarily mean he is old. It simply means he hasn't found his mate yet." The old woman then changed the topic, urging Kirsty to return to their work. However, before leaving, she made a promise to Kirsty. She lightly pinched Kirsty's shoulder, a gesture of affectionate assurance, and told her that if she remembered anything about the subject later, she would share the information with her.
