Kirsty sat silently in the carriage, her back pressed against the cold wall. The rhythmic sound of horse hooves hitting the ground provided a backdrop to the growls and snarls that filled the air outside. The cacophony of her kind's distress was impossible to ignore, and it gnawed at her nerves. However, Kirsty consciously made the decision not to look outside. The chaos unfolding beyond the carriage windows would only intensify her fear and panic. She knew that allowing herself to succumb to panic would serve no purpose in this moment of uncertainty. It was something she had been actively working on within herself – finding the strength to remain calm in the face of adversity.
She closed her eyes, focusing on her breathing and attempting to ground herself amidst the unsettling sounds surrounding her. She reminded herself that she couldn't control what was happening outside the carriage. What she could control, however, was her own reaction and how she chose to navigate the situation.
Battles trigger something in her and that made her head breaks into pieces. She didn’t know for whatever reason but sometimes, battles caused her to remember flashes of happenings that she knew were connected to her past. Another howling could be heard from the outside and this time, a long growl and noises of pain were the only thing that Kirsty heard as the darkness of the night engulfed them.
The absence of the moon, usually a comforting presence in the night sky, left a void in the atmosphere. The darkness seemed to envelop everything around them, lending an air of mystery and uncertainty to the scene. The absence of the moon's gentle radiance seemed to amplify the silence that hung in the air. The usual sounds of the night—the chirping of crickets, the rustling of leaves, and the distant howling of wolves—were subdued, as if nature itself held its breath in anticipation. It was as if the very absence of the moon had cast a spell, quieting the world around them and amplifying the weight of the present moment.
She was about to stand to peek once more into the hole but the moment she started to hold the wall to support her, something was thrown at the carriage, causing it to stumble on the ground as Kirsty was doing her best to stay vigilant as the carriage started to break as it was only made from woods.
"Keep your eyes on her!" a stern command echoed through the air, originating from the beta of the pack. The weight behind his words was unmistakable, indicating the importance of their vigilance and the need to maintain a watchful eye on Kirsty.
Kirsty opened her eyes as she was being attacked by the rogues, two rogues were so near to her as they destroy the carriage that contained her. She wanted to fight back but she couldn’t do so as her hands and feet were tied on her back. She felt helpless as she was thrown to the ground and men from the pack, now in their werewolf state excluding the beta, were running in her direction. She thought that they would kill her human state and she closed her eyes as their glowing eyes were running faster in her direction. She silently prayed to the moon goddess to spare her life from danger, and she continued to do so.
"Get around her!" the beta shouted, his voice filled with a commanding urgency. Kirsty's heart pounded in her chest as she watched the rogues from the pack converge upon her, their expressions fierce and determined. Panic surged through her veins, and she instinctively tried to distance herself from the imminent danger.
But just as she attempted to escape, a searing pain shot through her feet, causing her to cry out in agony. She hadn't even noticed that one of the rogues had managed to catch her moving feet, thwarting her escape. Her movements were abruptly halted, leaving her vulnerable and surrounded.
"Gather around her!!!" another man's voice rang out, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. Kirsty's mind raced as she realized that she had unwittingly become the central target of their attack. The realization sent a chill down her spine, as she understood the perilous position she now found herself in.
"Ahhhhhh!!!" Kirsty's cry of pain pierced the air, reverberating with the sharp agony that shot up her leg. Her eyes widened as her gaze shifted downward, fixing upon the claw that had lodged itself deep into her foot. Panic gripped her heart as she instinctively tried to pull away from the rogue's relentless grip, desperate to free herself from the clutches of her attacker.
But horror flooded her senses as she noticed another figure lurking in the shadows, poised to launch their own attack. Fear tightened its grip around her, squeezing her chest as she braced herself for the inevitable onslaught. It seemed as if her life would be tragically cut short, the hands of those who shared her kind poised to deliver a fatal blow. Yet, in that moment of impending doom, a sudden shift in the tides of fate intervened. A larger, majestic brown wolf bounded into the scene, leaping towards Kirsty with a ferocious determination. Its jaws snapped shut around the rogue, its powerful bite tearing through flesh and bone. The air filled with a symphony of snarls, growls, and the rustle of fur as the fierce struggle for survival unfolded before her eyes.
The rogue’s blood was flowing down her mouth, as it continued to attack the enemy. In the meantime, she felt that everything went in slow motion as her blood was rushing out on her feet and the rogue was thrown lifeless to the other one who was about to attack her. The brown wolf started to walk in Kirsty’s direction and sniffed her feet, and she saw that it was fully stained with her own blood, and she was frozen. She knew the ability of her own blood; she knew how intoxicating it was for the people and how it can cure any wounds and illness in whoever gets in contact with it. The other rogues who were about to attack the other carriages stopped what they were about to do and shifted their gaze at her.
Kirsty stopped moving and looked at the brown wolf who started to lick her own blood, and she closed her eyes as the wolf continued to do so. Kirsty did her part in curing her wound as the rogues started to walk in their direction. Two rogues were killed near her direction, and only three were left, including the largest one. Just as she was done with curing her own wound, the largest rogue shifted into her human state. And Kirsty was shocked at the sudden change of atmosphere. The brown wolf walked in front of her as if it was protecting her from the possible attack from the rogues.
Kirsty noticed that no one was killed among the men of the pack. And she smirked in her mind. She knew how powerful the members of the Trowbridge pack were and how they were trained by their Alpha. She knew these things as she heard this gossip in the warehouse whenever there were traders who come by.
“We know that the woman is a rogue. We will not fight you back if you give her to us.” The rogue who just turned into his human state stated loudly. His eyes were glowing with amusement and curiosity as he said every single word looking directly at her.
Kirsty was terrified about it.
She knew that the rogues started to negotiate things with them, and she was the reason for it. She didn’t want to go with the rogues and in her mind, she silently prayed that the men of the pack wouldn’t give her up.
The brown wolf slowly shifted into his human state and Kirsty was surprised to see the person who saved her from the grip of the rogues. It was the beta, Sam.
"Why? Is she that important?" he inquired, his voice laced with a hint of disbelief. It seemed that the concept of someone holding such significance and being the focus of their attention was difficult for him to grasp. The laughter that followed was filled with derision, echoing through the tense atmosphere.
"Give the rogue to us," the authoritative voice demanded, cutting through the tense silence that had settled over the room. The words carried an air of superiority as if the speaker believed they held the power to command obedience from others.
"No one can order me," Sam declared firmly, his voice resonating with a resolute strength. His words carried a weight of defiance and a sense of unwavering loyalty. The room seemed to hold its breath, the tension palpable as the standoff unfolded. It was a clash of wills, a battle between those who sought control and those who defended their autonomy. Sam's unwavering stance represented defiance against authority that aimed to dominate and manipulate.
The enemy's laughter grew louder, taking on a hysterical quality that sent shivers down the spines of those who heard it. It was a chilling sound, laced with a mix of arrogance and madness. With each step he took in front of the other rogues, he reveled in the chaos he had sown, relishing in the fear and confusion that swirled around him.
As Kirsty stood there, listening to the conversation unfolding before her, a mix of fear, confusion, and anger welled up inside her. The words spoken by the two men, referring to her as if she were mere property to be bought and sold, sent a chill down her spine. It was a stark reminder of the harsh reality she faced as a rogue werewolf in a world where power dynamics and ownership seemed to prevail.
"We own her. She's a rogue, and she belongs to us," one of the men stated with a sense of entitlement, his tone filled with arrogance and superiority. The implication was clear - they believed they had the right to control her fate and dictate her actions solely because she was a rogue.
“But we bought her. We now owned her.” The beta answered.
As the tension in the air thickened, the man with the smirk on his face spoke again, offering a twisted deal.
"We will stop the attack, and we will give you information about the Wolfbane...just give her to us." The mention of the Wolfbane caused a visible reaction in Sam, her instincts alerting her to the imminent danger.
Just the mention of the Wolfbane stiffened Sam. The rogues already know that they are back in the country. The group who destroyed their lives years ago, and the cause of the division of their kinds.
"And you think we are fools to believe you?" the beta sneered, his voice laced with a mix of amusement and suspicion. The underlying tone hinted at the possibility of a trade—a transaction of information in exchange for her safety. It was a scenario Kirsty had encountered before, where rogues and other individuals sought to exploit her vulnerability and use her as leverage.
She couldn’t either find the reasons why the beta won’t let her go, and won't trade her even though the information about this group that the rogue mentioned was important to the beta.
“We are not done. We will be back.” The man stated firmly as he looked into Kirsty’s eyes.
He shifted back into his wolf state, and the other rogues followed him as they vanished into the other forest. The beta started to walk in Kirsty’s direction and untied her feet so that she could stand on her feet.
"Your blood..." Sam whispered, his voice close to her ear. Kirsty's heart raced as she caught the implications behind his words. A mix of fear and uncertainty gripped her, making her deny the accusation instinctively.
"I... I don't know what you're talking about," she stammered, her voice betraying her inner turmoil. The weight of the situation was pressing upon her, and she realized that her very existence as a rogue among the pack was under scrutiny.
"Bring her to my carriage!" His authoritative tone left no room for argument. Kirsty watched as he walked away without even sparing her a glance, his focus elsewhere.
She knew the moment she decided to be with the pack, the beta would be one of the reasons that her safety would be compromised.
