CHAPTER 2 - A Proposal She Couldn’t Refuse

1037 Words
Arabella sat in her room, the soft glow of the desk lamp illuminating her face as she stared blankly at the notebook in front of her. The words “marriage proposal” seemed to dance across the page, mocking her inability to escape this path her father had chosen for her. She had never felt more suffocated in her life. The conversation earlier with Mr. Whitmore, her father, replayed in her mind. It had been short, sharp, and devoid of the warmth that she had longed for from him. He had made his decision, and nothing—absolutely nothing—she said would change it. “You need to understand, Arabella,” Mr. Whitmore had said, his voice cold and unwavering. “This marriage is what’s best for the family. You will see that in time.” Her father’s words echoed in her ears, but instead of bringing comfort, they only fueled her frustration. The man she was being forced to marry, Mr. Ashford, was wealthy, powerful, and old enough to be her father. Arabella didn’t even know much about him beyond his wealth and influence, but she could tell that his intentions were not genuine. It was all about business—a way for her father to secure more power and more status. Arabella’s happiness didn’t factor into any of it. Her stepsister, Celeste, had tried to convince her to accept the proposal, speaking of how it would bring the family great prestige. “Arabella, think of what you’ll gain,” Celeste had said, her voice laced with excitement. “The life you’ve always dreamed of will be within your reach. The Whitmore name will grow even stronger.” But Arabella had never wanted that kind of life. The luxury and the fame all meant nothing if she had to sacrifice her own dreams and desires for it. She didn’t want to be another trophy wife, married off for business purposes. She wanted to have a life of her own, one where she could make her own choices and find love on her terms, not because it was convenient for the family business. The weight of her father’s decision pressed heavily on her chest. She paced the room, her thoughts a whirlwind of emotions. The luxury of her surroundings only served to remind her of how trapped she felt—her father’s mansion, her expensive clothes, and everything she had ever known seemed to lose their luster when she considered the price of it all. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Arabella paused and wiped a stray tear from her cheek before walking over to answer. She opened the door to find her stepmother standing there with a look of concern on her face. “Arabella,” Mrs. Whitmore said softly, “I know you’re upset. But please understand that your father is only doing what he believes is best. You know how much he cares for you. This marriage will help us all.” Arabella’s lips pressed together in a tight line, but she said nothing. She couldn’t bring herself to argue anymore. It felt like there was no use in fighting a battle she had already lost. Mrs. Whitmore stepped closer, gently placing a hand on her shoulder. “I just want you to be happy,” she said. “I know this is difficult, but try to think of the bigger picture. There’s so much that can come from this.” Arabella nodded stiffly, but her heart wasn’t in it. The idea of marrying Mr. Ashford felt like a prison sentence, a life sentence to a future she didn’t want. She didn’t want to be caged in by her father’s decisions. But deep down, Arabella knew there was little she could do to change it. Mr. Whitmore was a man of power, and when he made up his mind, nothing could sway him. As Mrs. Whitmore left the room, Arabella sat back down at her desk, her thoughts still in turmoil. She wasn’t sure how long she sat there, lost in her own mind, but eventually, a sudden thought struck her. There had to be a way out of this. There had to be a solution that didn’t involve marrying a man she didn’t know or care for. Arabella stared at the blank page before her and an idea began to form in her mind. What if she didn’t have to marry for love? What if there was another way? A way to gain her freedom while still keeping her family’s reputation intact? Her fingers hovered over the notebook as she considered the possibility of a contract marriage—an arrangement where she wouldn’t be bound by the traditional expectations of love or romance but could gain something more practical, something that would allow her to maintain her independence. As she pondered the thought, a flash of someone she had only heard about crossed her mind. A man who was powerful, wealthy beyond measure, and known for his business dealings. He was a name that everyone in the business world recognized—someone who had the resources and connections to make any marriage proposal seem like a golden opportunity. Arabella felt a strange sense of resolve building inside her. Perhaps this man could offer her a way out, a way to secure her future without having to marry Mr. Ashford. It was a risky idea, but what other choice did she have? She had to take control of her own destiny. With a deep breath, Arabella picked up her laptop and began to search for more information about the man she had in mind. His name was Alexander Lee, a businessman who had made his fortune in ways that intrigued her. He was known for his charm, his cold, business-minded persona, and his mysterious past. He was also more powerful than anyone her father could ever know. A man like him could help her navigate the world she was about to be thrust into. Arabella didn’t know what the future held, but one thing was certain: she was no longer willing to sit idly by while her father controlled her life. It was time to take matters into her own hands.
